Lucifer - S1E1 - Pilot

Just so everyone knows I researched devil puns and sayings in anticipation of recapping this show. That being said let the devil puns begin!

Lucifer Morningstar 

The intro at the beginning of the show lets us know that Lucifer was the favored son of God until he was cast down to Hell … and then he decided to take a vacation and left hell for the City of Angels where he runs a club and generally whores around using his powers to seduce and bewilder everyone. Lucifer Morningstar (the fact that he says that to people and no one blinks cracks me up every time) is played by Tom Ellis. Ellis sets an excellent tone for this rogue, salacious character with his British accent and flippant mannerisms. You immediately get why people want to sleep with him or tell him their darkest secrets.

Devil May Care 

Enter the second half of our dynamic duo, Chloe Dancer, played by Lauren German. When Lucifer’s friend, Deliliah, is gunned down in front of him, he meets the detective and because he’s determined to find out who killed Delilah, Lucifer follows her around helping her solve the case. Along the way we discover that she’s a former actress turned cop struggling to earn respect at her job. She also works and co-parents with her ex who is a fellow detective (in the original pilot this character was played by Nick Gonzalez, the current role is played by Kevin Alejandro). Lucifer unhappily discovers that Det. Dancer is the one person who is immune to his charms. Either she’s one of the few completely moral humans he’s ever encountered or there’s something supernatural about Chloe yet to be revealed. 

Bewitched, Bothered and Bedeviled 

What will no doubt be fun for the audience each week is watching Lucifer bewitch various criminals and/or women. The therapist, Linda, played by comedian Rachael Harris is hilariously randy and also functions as the Dr. Melfi to Lucifer’s Tony Soprano. What’s really interesting is seeing Lucifer struggle with having left his job. His fellow demons are afraid he’s becoming too human and when Delilah’s killer dies, he realizes that there’s no one in hell to make sure he gets the punishment he deserves. There’s also Amenadiel, played by DB Woodside, another angel who wants him to take his place in Hell and restore balance. So there we have our season-long arc: Will Lucifer retake his rightful place in Hell or has he already come to care about humans too much?
