Moffat Leaves Doctor Who

Huge news, Whovians.

According to multiple sources including the Doctor Who official Twitter account, Steven Moffat is stepping down as head writer and executive producer after the next season of Doctor Who. As we suspected due to Sherlock’s schedule, no new Who episodes will air until the Christmas special of 2016, which will be produced by Moffat. His swan song, a 12-episode season 10, will then air in Spring 2017 with a new companion in place. After that, Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall will take the reins.

Chibnall is a long-time fan of the series and award-winning writer and producer, most recently on Broadchurch with three BAFTAs. He wrote part of last season’s “The Magician’s Apprentice,” as well as “The Power of Three,” “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship,” “Cold Blood,” “The Hungry Earth,” and “42.” Previously he worked with The Great Train Robbery, United, Law & Order: UK, Life on Mars, and Torchwood. According to Chibnall, Moffat, who stated that his “timey-wimey is running out,” plans to go out “with a bang.”
