In ‘Urban Legend,’ Kamala’s rescue attempt starts off well enough. Turns out she’s not face-to-face with The Inventor, but one of his henchmen, a skinny jeans wearing and ray gun wielding boy named Doyle. He gives her an opportunity to go, but Kamala’s a superhero and superheroes don’t run from danger. Well, they do after they’re zapped with a ray gun and it takes all of their energy to heal the wound. Kamala’s a smart girl so she leaves her first real battle to keep from getting killed. Unfortunately, she also leaves without Vick.
Turns out, fighting and getting wounded takes a lot out of a growing girl. While she binges at home, her parents discover that she has, once again, snuck out of the house. The heart-to-heart with her father was the highlight of this issue. He knows Kamala has a huge heart and a good head on her shoulders, so he trusts her when she says she’s being careful. But that doesn’t mean she’s off the hook - she’s still totally grounded.
The thing about truly intelligent people is that they’re smart enough to know what they don’t know. Then they act accordingly. The next few pages show Kamala training to control her powers with some help from Bruno, including a new costume made from an invention of his: Super Snot. Don’t ask. All you need to know is that it’s stretchy and will make Kamala’s embiggening relatively painless. Properly prepared, Kamala heads back to rescue Vick and this time she’s successful.
Of course, no good deed goes unpunished and The Inventor’s crew vandalize the convenience store as a warning to the area’s new superhero. Kamala, as Ms. Marvel, assures the crowd with a message of her own: “This is Jersey City. We talk loud, we walk fast, and we don’t take any disrespect. Don’t mess.”
The Inventor (Mr. Edison) tells Doyle that he’s helped create an urban legend in the area. And he’s not happy about it.
