New Photos from the Set of Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Filming on Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier is underway on the streets of Cleveland, Ohio, and this has afforded us the opportunity to see a bit of what we have to look forward to when the film hits theaters April 4, 2014. Including a glimpse at the character design for Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier.
Following the events of Marvel’s The Avengers (and the massive scale of the film, its budget, and its success), and now that Iron Man 3 has come along and also grossed over $1 billion, you can bet Winter Soldier will aim to blow your arm off with action and explosions just like the one pictured above. Captain America: The Winter Soldier sees a Steve Rogers who is still coping with his “man out of time” existence (and teaming with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Black Widow), which should give us a complementary story to go with Iron Man 3’s “more iron or man?” question and Thor: The Dark World‘s presumed story of reuniting Thor with his home, his love, and his brother. Phase 2, so far, has dealt a lot with sacrifice and what it costs to be a hero; The Winter Soldier will touch on that, too, when Steve Rogers is confronted with his best friend Bucky Barnes’ return from the dead, as The Winter Soldier.
Ever since his first appearance in 2005 in Captain America Vol. 5 Issue #1, The Winter Soldier has been a fan-favorite, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the Marvel Phase 2 film I’m personally looking most forward to. Back in early April, we got a look at some concept art for the film, and it was frankly not very encouraging. At the time, I had hoped the character design we saw of The Winter Soldier would stop at the “concept” stage and not make it to the film. With today’s look at the character, my hopes were dashed.
Fanboys can be dramatic, so let me be clear: Is it terrible? No. Will it ruin the movie? No. Does he look like he should be fighting Shredder with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Yes. Do I wish they had gone with the character design from the comics? Yes.
The only reason I can think of for this bandana slap across the face to this character is that Marvel is going to try and keep the guy’s identity a secret for at least a portion of the film. Why else cover his face? The thing about that? It’s stupid (if that is, indeed, the reason). Everyone knows it’s Sebastian Stan; everyone knows Sebastian Stan played Bucky in Captain America: The First Avenger. Even if you haven’t read any comics and are somehow only familiar with the films, you still know. On top of that, that thing called the internet; the thing we’re on right now? It still exists. Just look at the person holding the sign in the next picture.
“No pictures please!”? It’s 2013; everything is photographed. Honestly, this makes me think we’re being trolled; that’s how out-of-touch the concept of “No pictures please!” seems. Maybe we’ll all show up at the theater next year and be surprised when that’s not actually what the character looks like, but it’s more likely that they actually thought people might not take pictures.
I’m still majorly psyched to see this adaptation come to life, though; don’t get me wrong. Just like I’m still convinced Thor: The Dark World will be awesome, even though I wasn’t very impressed by that film’s first trailer. Marvel’s recent track record still has my undivided faith that they will not screw up. This Winter Soldier design is just a tiny scratch on my shield; good thing it’s made of vibranium.
