Marvel is Going Back to Basics with Spidey #1

Hey guys, remember when Spider-Man was a carefree teenager who swung around cracking wise? You know, before the Civil War and Clone Saga (ugh), becoming the protector of the universe and being stuck with a symbiote? If you’re nostalgic for those days of old, my friend, prepare to make new memories as Marvel has announced the launch of a new ongoing title focusing on Peter Parker’s teenage years as Spider-Man!

Spidey, written by Robbie Thompson (Silk, CW’s Supernatural) and drawn by Nick Bradshaw (Guardians of the Galaxy, Wolverine and the X-Men) intends to deepen the early history of Peter Parker and his bumbling start as the web-crawler, and it all happens within continuity. Given the prolific world-building, characterization and rogues gallery developed over the last 50+ years, how can more be told about young Parker? Nick Lowe, Spider-Man editor, brings to light a fact which many fans are possibly unawares: “Out of the 700+ issues of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Peter Parker was only in high school for thirty issues! Stan [Lee] and Steve [Ditko] covered a lot, but there’s a lot of the high school and early super hero experience still on the table.”

Marvel EiC Axel Alonso, on what Spidey will provide fans, both casual and devoted.

“Everyone remembers their FIRST Spider-Man comic. Spidey aims to be perfect as someone’s first Spider-Man comic, or their one thousandth. We’re not looking to re-tell stories here. What Robbie [Thompson] and Nick [Bradshaw] have put together is an exciting new take on Spider-Man at his arguably most iconic incarnation, and will feel fresh to new and old fans alike.”

Expect high flying action, some old school banter, the reappearance of classic villains and supporting characters, and perhaps a smidgen of high school drama as Spidey’s first issue will be on shelves November, 2015.
