New to Netflix: April 2013

What’s good, people? Joseph here, and I’m bringing you the new hotness for Netflix Instant Streaming for the month of April. We’ve got a small but potent selection of new items, so let’s make like the Russian billionaire in those DirecTV commercials and jump in it.

 

4/1 - 48 Hrs. (1983) - Detective Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) is forced to do the unbearable in order to catch a pair of escaped cop killers: He temporarily paroles wisecracking hustler Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy) into his custody. The dilemma: This odd couple has only 48 hours to solve the crime before Reggie has to go back to the slammer. Murphy’s Golden Globe-nominated performance in this buddy-cop comedy helped put his career on a trajectory to superstardom. I love this movie; it’s so…so…80s. I’m gonna have to set aside some time to watch this.

4/1 - Along Came a Spider (2001) - When a girl is kidnapped from a prestigious prep school, homicide detective Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman) takes the case, teaming up with young security agent Jezzie Flannigan (Ashley Judd) in hopes of finding the girl and stopping the brutal psychopath before it’s too late. Don’t forget, people; Morgan Freeman was Alex Cross before Tyler Perry bunked it up. So, to see him in one of his frequent collaborations with Ashley Judd, check it out here.

4/1 - Clear and Present Danger (1994) - When the president’s close friend is murdered over ties to a Colombian drug cartel, CIA Deputy Director Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) becomes unwittingly involved in an illegal paramilitary operation that goes awry. This is Harrison Ford at his ass kickingest (the red squiggly line says that’s not a word, but it’s describing Harrison Ford; therefore, it’s a word), and I can’t wait to check it out again.

4/1 - Quigley Down Under (1990)

4/1 - Man on the Moon (1999) - Jim Carrey gives the performance of his career as the insanely inventive comedian Andy Kaufman, best known as lovable mechanic Latka Gravas on the 1970s sitcom “Taxi,” who shocked audiences with his caustic, off-the-wall routines. Director Milos Forman vividly recreates the era (with help from Lorne Michaels and David Letterman, who play themselves) and profiles a man who often blended comedy with performance art. This is one of Jim Carrey’s best non-comedic works (“The Truman Show” being the other), and I think he should’ve continued on that trend. At any rate, this is another good movie to check out, so give it a go.

4/1 - Roman Holiday (1953) - Audrey Hepburn, the essence of 1950s chic, stars in an Oscar-winning performance as a cosseted European princess who goes AWOL in Rome and is soon taken under the wing of tabloid journalist Gregory Peck and his photographer sidekick, Eddie Albert. She thinks the boys don’t suspect who she really is, but they’re onto her — and sense a sensational story if they can just keep Audrey’s handlers from retrieving her too soon.

4/23 - Are We There Yet? (2005) – This is about the time where Ice Cube decided making money was more important than the hustle, and I can’t help but agree with him. Hoping to impress a foxy divorcée, ladies’ man Nick offers to take her two kids on an extended road trip. But Nick isn’t prepared for the mischievous duo’s antics, as they expertly chase off any guy who makes a move on their mother.
