New to Netflix - February 2013

Hey, ya! Joseph here, and I’m bringing you the new releases to Netflix for February. You know how we do it here, so let’s just jump right in.

 

2/1 - Ffolkes (1980)

2/1 - Liar Liar (1997) - Lawyer Fletcher Reede’s (Jim Carrey) mendacious ways destroyed his marriage and alienated his son, Max (Justin Cooper). But when Max makes a birthday wish that magically comes true, Fletcher finds himself incapable of telling a lie for 24 hours. That’s great news for Max and his mom (Maura Tierney), but terrible timing for Fletcher, who’s due in court to try a major divorce case. Carrey earned a Golden Globe nod for his role in this broad comedy. This is my favorite Jim Carrey movie, and it’ll get lots of replay value from me.

2/1 - Bad Boys (1995) - Miami narcotics cops Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are on the trail of a master crook who’s snatched $100 million worth of heroin. To get the lone witness to talk, Lowrey and Burnett must pose as each other, swapping lives as they work the case. Michael Bay’s made a lot of crap. This film isn’t one of them. This is my favorite Michael Bay film ever, and I can’t wait to see it streaming.

2/1 - Species (1995) - When scientists discover alien DNA, they create the ultimate femme fatale: a hybrid woman named Sil (Natasha Henstridge) with supermodel looks, deadly shape-shifting abilities and raging hormones. When Sil escapes, a team scrambles to find her before she can reproduce. If you can get past Natasha Henstridge’s nudity (really, she’s nude through most of the movie – not that I’m complaining, mind you), this is a pretty engrossing thriller that’s worth a watch.

2/1 - Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) - Teenage Ferris (Matthew Broderick) convinces his entire school he’s at death’s door, then hits the streets of Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) and best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) for a day of fun. But the school’s fed-up principal is determined to catch him and put an end to his field trip. This is a classic comedy that doesn’t feel anachronistic at all. I highly recommend watching this one if for anything but to wipe the taste of that horrible commercial Matthew Broderick did out of your mouth.

2/1 - The Naked Gun (1988) - When the incredibly thick Officer Frank Drevin (Leslie Nielsen) seeks the ruthless killer of his partner (O.J. Simpson), he stumbles and pratfalls on a plot to off Queen Elizabeth. Priscilla Presley plays his equally dim love interest with the same hilarious dumb luck. The fellows who brought you Airplane! bring on gobs more slapstick and stupid humor in this police-show parody that launched the bizarrely numbered series (Naked Gun 2 1/2, 33 1/3). Listen…Leslie Nielsen is one of the comedic greats of all time, and that’s in part due to his deadpan delivery. If you’ve never seen any of the movies in this series, they’re all available on Netflix now. You no longer have an excuse.

2/1 - Top Gun (1986) - Tom Cruise stars as a hotshot flyboy who struggles to control himself, responsibility and a steamy love affair while competing at the U.S. Navy’s fighter-weapons school, better known as Top Gun. Anthony Edwards plays his loyal co-pilot. This movie was a lot of fun to watch…the inaccuracies of naval life notwithstanding (here’s a hint: enlisted personnel don’t give a shit about officers under normal circumstances; they’d give less than a shit about them in the climax of this movie), it’s a fun watch. Plus, you get to see the most homoerotic display of volleyball ever captured on cinema.

2/1 - Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) - In the final chapter of director Robert Rodriguez’s outlaw trilogy, the CIA recruits traveling vigilante El Mariachi to take down a corrupt general allied with a powerful drug lord — who plans to overthrow the president of Mexico. It has Antonio Banderas being a badass, Salma Hayek being sexy as hell, and Johnny Depp being…well…Johnny Depp. What more do you want?

2/1 - Scrooged (1988) - Cold-hearted TV exec Bill Murray is about to discover the true meaning of Christmas — the hard way. Director Richard Donner’s wild, woolly spin on Dickens’s A Christmas Carol sees Murray visited by three high-spirited spirits. This is my all-time favorite holiday movie, and I don’t care if it’s coming out in February; I’m gonna watch it until it wears out!

2/1 - Trading Places (1983) - Streetwise hustler Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) trades places with wealthy investment executive Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) as part of a bet cooked up by the rich, greedy Duke brothers (Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche). But when Valentine and Winthorpe find out about the wager, the payback begins. This is another one of those movies that you need to see as soon as possible. This is classic comedy, and it’s just a whole lot of fun.
