Pretty Little Liars - S7E4 - Hit and Run, Run, Run

The more things change, the more they stay the same. And starting now, that’s a good thing. This week, Pretty Little Liars finally made moves back in the direction that made the campy sudser so addictive and fun. The girls are (for the most part) working together to cover a crime, stay one step ahead of an unknown enemy, and everyone’s a suspect. Mona is back and so is Jenna. This is the PLL I love.

The Liars fall deeper into old habits in the aftermath of Elliot’s death. There’s so much panic, tears, and blame that it’s a bit unclear who thinks burying him in the woods and staging his disappearance is a good idea, but they’re all on board in the end - even Alison, who reaches in her dead husband’s pocket for his Welby keycard, which they need to sneak her back in. The Liars conveniently leave out the part where they’re the ones who made Elliot and Mary Drake think she killed Charlotte to begin with. Later, Alison tells Aria she fought with her sister, but didn’t kill her. Aria believes her.

With Ali back in Welby, the Liars set about establishing their alibis and disposing of Elliot’s car. Thankfully, Mona reappears as only Mona can: at the creepiest, most suspect, but totally necessary time. They all spend time having public brunch, going to work, and almost having casual sex in an elevator with a man they just met at the bar. You know, typical alibi stuff.

Everyone feels only slightly less guilty for killing Elliot once Toby reveals Elliot was using a dead man’s identity. His real name is Archer, which is the name Jenna calls out when Mona answers “Elliot’s” burner phone. See? Classic Pretty Little Liars. There’s always more to it. Elliot wasn’t working with Mary alone. Also, I feel like there’s no way Jenna is still blind. I’m back on board with Hanna’s old plan to hang a sign: Bitch can see.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Pretty Little Liars without all the secrets and lies coming at a cost. This week, Spencer is forced to turn Caleb away so she can hide the fact that she has Hanna (slightly bruised from the accident) in her house. She may have pushed him away one too many times as he eventually moves out. Hanna is actually not engaged anymore, but rocking a fake rock, which Mona noticed because Mona is awesome.

Special kudos to Troian Bellisario and Ashley Benson for nailing their scenes as they both had to listen to Caleb beg through a door for a second chance with Spencer. This is one of the first times this season where their problems felt grown-up and handled maturely.
