Project Fandom at C2E2 2014
So, last weekend was C2E2 here in Chicago. Or, if you’re not familiar, Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo.
“Chicago’s pop culture event” they call it. And an event it is! This was my third year in a row. Though nothing compares to the shock and awe of the very first time, this year was just as fun as past years. They were set up in a different area of the building that gave more room in-between aisles and booths, so it felt less crowded than in the past. I liked it. I always carry a backpack to put my comics and such in, so it was nice to be able to walk without knocking somebody over or me getting knocked over by the hundreds of other people also with backpacks. Though, for some reason, there were dozens of unattended strollers to trip over, so I guess you just trade one thing in for another. I kept saying, “People need to leave their kids at home!”, but we all know I’d be bringing my kids and dressing them up. There was a baby Hulk there, and I am stealing the idea once my baby is old enough for it to be acceptable to cover them in green paint.
There were a lot of Frozen princesses, but I was happy to see a lot of little girls dressed as male superheroes. I don’t care much for gender roles, so I was very excited by this. There was a 5 year old Darth Vader, several girl Thors and Doctor Who Doctors, and tons of uncountable other characters. I love that the kids can nerd out as much as their parents do. I can’t wait to have my own. And if he or she is completely uninterested and boring, I’m sending them back.
I only went on Sunday, so unfortunately, I didn’t get to see any panels, and I did not want to shell out any extra money for autographs, though I’m sure there were plenty of exciting people there to see. I didn’t get to follow Joey Lawrence around like last year, but I guess that’s a once in a lifetime experience, anyway. Though, anybody could have been in this costume:
The guests this year were all hidden behind curtains rather then being in an open booth for anyone with good eyesight or binoculars to see.
I did get to meet the artist for my current favorite comic, Rat Queens. He was very nice, but they were sold out of the Rat Queens trade, so I did not get an autograph. I should have bought one ahead of time and brought it, but I didn’t think that far ahead. All I thought was, “Toys, toys, and toys!” Most of my time was spent looking for toys and/or action figures. If you know me, you know that I have a bit of a collection, and I haven’t added to that in a while. I hit every single booth that sold toys… okay, I’m pretty sure I hit every single booth period, but I spent more time at the ones with toys.
My favorite find of the day was a Hagrid figure. One step closer to rounding out my Harry Potter action figure collection!
The rest of my purchases were Funko Pop Vinyl figures. I picked up Heat Miser and Cold Miser, Marty Mcfly and Doc Brown, and Slimer and Egon. They are all paired off on my shelf.
My fiance picked up the board game Quantum, and our friend got the games Monty Python Fluxx, and Boss Monster. Hopefully we get to play them all again.

I picked up the Rat Queens Volume 1 Sass & Sorcery and issue 6 on Saturday. Love it! And, my girls have the beginnings of what looks like it could be a rather extensive Pop Vinyl collection started - Teen Titans Go and TMNT are their favorites. I want to buy Dr. Whooves next time I go to our local comic shop.
I wanted to get the TMNT Pop Vinyl characters too, but they were only being sold by the more expensive booths. And nobody have Michaelangelo! I can’t start any TMNT collection without starting with Michaelangelo.
Ha! The girls have Donatello and Leonardo and a handful of the mashems, too. I only let them get one vinyl per visit. Unfortunately for my wallet, those visits are becoming more frequent 🙂 Interesting about the prices, though. The vendors at awesomecon last month were selling same price as in-store.
