Queen Sugar - S2E9/S2E10 - Yet I Do Marvel/Drums at Dusk
Previously on Queen Sugar, “Freedom’s Plow”
The Borderlons have taken a collective step back as Queen Sugar returns with the back half of season two. No firm decision has been made on what to do with the bombshell information that Ralph Angel is the sole inheritor to the Borderlon farm. Instead, each of the siblings focus on other familial and professional issues.
Perhaps it’s his impending nuptials to Darla, or maybe it’s the fact that the first harvest is almost ready and he’ll be able to see the fruits of his labor, but Ralph Angel starts “Yet I Do Marvel,” more level-headed, responsible, and happier than we’ve seen the character all series. He and Darla reveal their engagement to the family one by one, and with each announcement you can see the tension coiled inside Ralph Angel; he expected more pushback than he actually got. Aunt Vi was her usual cautious self and had questions, but she couldn’t deny the lengths both her nephew and Darla have gone to in order to turn their lives around.
Unfortunately, the petulant man-child Ralph Angel can sometimes (often times) be reared its head by the end of the second hour after an embarrassing run-in with a man who used to pay Darla for sex so she could score drugs. Considering how much Darla has endured — including the continued silence from her family despite calling them with her good news — it’s particularly frustrating to watch Ralph Angel be so stubborn and hypocritical. The man who spends nearly every episode whining about how no one will let go of his past mistakes can’t give the mother of his son and future wife a bit of compassion. Thankfully, Aunt Vi suggested pre-marriage counselor and it appears the couple will take her up on it.
Okay, look; I’m still not here for Dr. Robert Dubois. He’s just too… much. Too pushy. Too into Nova. Too… much. I know, I know. He’s handsome, successful, smart, and shares her passion for social justice, but… I kinda want him gone.
He encourages Nova to write a story about the possibility of the Zika virus affecting those in the ward. Nova’s ex and fellow activist Chantal (Reagan Gomez-Preston) isn’t feeling it and worries it will cause unnecessary panic when Nova could be using her platform to address more concrete and immediate concerns. With Nova’s help, Robert’s project receives necessary funding from the blowhard conservative from the mid-season finale. Even though Dr. Dubae looks good on paper — and they don’t seem to be having any problems in the bedroom — Nova is holding back. (Listen to your instincts, girl!) The big question is: Is this another case of Nova’s commitment issues keeping her from something great?
The introduction of Charley’s mother has been highly anticipated since it was first hinted that her relationship with Earnest (and Charley’s existence) was the cause of much upheaval in the Borderlon’s lives. Charley’s own stories — only trickling out in the first half of this season - painted a picture of someone hard to please and even harder to impress. Lorna Prescott’s (Sharon Lawrence) arrival comes just as news of Charley’s and Davis divorce breaks and as Charley is trying to find her place among St. Joe’s sugar mill community.
Those expecting their interracial make up (Lorna is White) to play into the mother-daughter friction were probably disappointed. Lorna’s judgment, critiques, and advice all felt like standard overbearing mother fare. It’s not until Charley tells her of the hard time she had trying to get White farmers to use her mill that we see Lorna’s perspective may be too limited for her to be of much help. Her solution is steeped in “you’re my daughter and you can do anything” and that’s fine, but pushing through racism in an industry with its origins in slavery — in the South — is going to require a bit more than a Can-Do spirit and elbow grease.
Lorna’s brief interaction with Aunt Vi is only the beginning. She hasn’t even seen Nova yet.
More Tea
Aunt Vi’s keeping a health issue secret. She fainted earlier in the season, her hairdresser points out that she’s losing hair, and she’s experiencing moments of dizziness. Whatever it is, it better be curable. This family has been through enough and she just got an offer to sell her pies in a major supermarket.
Lorna and Earnest were married, y’all. *sips tea*
I understand Micah’s desire to move beyond the police brutality he experienced, but now that Charley and Nova know, I don’t think it’s going to be that simple… and I’m not sure it should be. Micah shouldn’t shoulder the burden, but the thought of the police officer getting away with it makes my stomach turn.

FOR THE PODCAST:
Darla and Charley are two sides of the same coin. It’s sad because I really thought that after Darla left that voicemail, that we were going to get something from her parents, but to see that they STILL haven’t acknowledge her is rough.
Bastard, hypocrite, man child, ex convict, I mean damn RA just really irks me! I’m sorry but Darla DESERVES better. She SHOULD NOT marry him. I guess the apple don’t fall far from the damn tree. RA is his father’s son. Shit, I mean the way Darla was yelling and raising her voice she was OVER it and she should be. Talking about me, me, me, I, I, I not everything is about you RA! The sponsor told his dumb ass if you are not ready to help her and if you are not ready to deal with her past then LEAVE HER ALONE!
Talking about how he can’t get the picture of her and that dude out of his mind, like nigga do you think that she can get that image out her mind, or the image of Blue and the hotel room out of her mind, like he must think she is just constantly thinking about daisies, roses, sunshine, and candy, because if he really thinks that she isn’t replaying those moments in her head everyday than he is an even BIGGER idiot than I .thought he was before. That scene really hurt my heart. HER FIRST NIGHT!!!! 🙄😡
Love the podcast! 💙
For the podcast
Solid return. If RA don’t stop with that bullshit! Getting on my last damn nerve!
Charley’s mama is a piece of work! Did she say she & Ernest were married? WTF?
#Blacklove with Keke/Micah & I guess Nova/DuBois
Vi better get well cause I ain’t here for her dying!
That’s it! Kept it short! Can’t wait to hear the podcast! I’ve been dying during this podcast drought after GoT.
Ra: You big dummy how the hell did you think you were never going to run into to one of Darla/Star’s old customers ya’ll still live in St. Joe and you proposed to the former St. Joe Hoe. Really Ra stealing cards and committing armed robbery was for Blue you couldn’t go clean some toilets or work at a fast food spot to provide for him. I hate how he acts like his mistakes aren’t that big and should be forgiven/forgotten but constantly throwing his sisters/Darla’s in their face. At least Darla got clean an turned her life around yo ass steal committing crimes. His ass has almost been arrested 3x since this show started we ain’t seen Darla with a crack pipe or needle yet so he just need to go sit his slow ass down in that rocking chair and look at that sugar cane for the rest of the season.
Aunt Vi: I hope she opens up about her illness to at least Hollywood very soon. This grocery deal don’t seem that great 350 pies a week 52 weeks in a year so 18,200 pies per year and he only offered her 50,000 dollars that’s only like $2.75 a pie and that man probably about to sell them pies for $7.99-$9.99. Question Aunt Vi why is Nova’s pain from Ernest leaving her momma over 20 years ago more important than the fact that Charley might need/want her Mama there to help her cope with what she is going through ( her father died, a divorce, child traumatized from being arrested for being black, and finding out that your father cut you out of his will all while trying to fight against some racist to open a mill). Lorna better have done something more than take Ernest from True because being a man stealer ain’t enough to be banished from a state for all eternity especially when your child and grandchild live there and are both going through a hard time.
Ernest: He was really out here family hoping had Nova with True then left them, married Lorna and had Charley. Then divorced Lorna and got back with True. Do you think he got the money to by Vi’s share of the farm from Lorna? An if he did do you think Charley/Lorna will take half farm saying that Ernest never paid Lorna back for the loan.
Ra: You big dummy how the hell did you think you were never going to run into to one of Darla/Star’s old customers ya’ll still live in St. Joe and you proposed to the former St. Joe Hoe. Question Aunt Vi why is Nova’s ( who lets be honest is a Lorna herself Calvin had a wife and kids) pain from Ernest leaving her momma over 20 years ago more important than the fact that Charley might need/want her Mama there to help her cope with what she is going through ( her father died, a divorce, child traumatized from being arrested for being black, and finding out that your father cut you out of his will all while trying to fight against some racist to open a mill). Do you think he got the money to by Vi’s share of the farm from Lorna? An if he did do you think Charley/Lorna will take half farm saying that Ernest never paid Lorna back for the loan.
Is Charley still considered a break baby if Ernest married her momma first I had to rewind a during that scene when Charley called Ernest her momma’s Ex-husband mid rant to Remy.
Micah yo ass joining the ain’t shit team with yo uncle, Grandaddy, & daddy. How are you sitting there acting like ya mama wasn’t asking and setting up therapy appointments ( that your ass flaked on) to find out what had you so damn shook. An ya momma divorcing your daddy who as far as she knows cheated with a prostitute for 3 years is grounds for you to question her loyalty to family. It was only okay for her to leave ya daddy if he was a rapist but serial cheater nah she gotta suck that shit up and stay.
Darla should just co-parent with RA and that’s it. He’s always going to see her as wounded. She isn’t living up to his saintly image that he has in his head, so he is going to judge her like he ain’t still out there stealing and pulling guns on folks. He really holds the women in his life to a different standard than the men in his life. Hollywood hiding a whole ass wife quickly forgiven ( He didn’t even get mad at Hollywood at the party when all they knew was that wood had a wife and not the why. Even helped him take his wife home.)but Aunt Vi dancing on someone else was unacceptable he threw that in her face real quick last season. His sisters living their lives and barely coming home terrible but he’s the better child because he stayed even though his jail bird ass wasn’t much help to the daddy. He didn’t even at the least shoot Davis a dirty look he was dap his ass up thanking him for bringing Blue some stank ass balls like this nigga hadn’t just been caught cheating on his sister. Him stealing cards and armed robbery okay because it was for Blue but Darla should be punished for all eternity for hooking for drugs even though she was not in her right state of mind thanks to the drugs.
So glad the show is back and glad that Charley’s White mama finally brought her ass down to Nola. Now I just need her to spill the tea on this apparently banishment worthy love triangle. Not only was Charley a teen mom ( Charley is 34 I’m guessing since her 18 year relationship w/ Davis was more than half her life)she had a shot gun wedding too. Did y’all see how Darla looked and rubbed her stomach when Charley said she looked pregnant in her dress do y’all think she is pregnant?
Did y’all see Calvin and Nova in the promo for what ‘s coming up for the rest of the season. It’ll be interesting to see how Nova handles Calvin being back in her life.

For the podcast
So glad y’all are keeping the black ass podcast going.
Nova- eh I am not moved by Bobby DuBae. Nova is letting her guard down for the D.
Charley- White Mama thought that “Good pedigree” was enough to block racism. She’s 53% AND she definitely married Ernest to spite her own family not for love. Props to Charley for not flipping the table at that meeting
RA- Fuck him.
Darla- I just want to hug her…..and choose a different wedding dress. She is trying to do the work and that nigga is dimming her light.
Tried to keep it short. Thanks for the Podcast I love watching and talking about this beautiful Black ass show with yall.
For the podcast: my thoughts:
1. premiere was directed by Julia Dash (daughters of the dust)-well done! 👏🏾
2. RAH PT 1/who is THIS GUY?Pt 2-same old RAH🙄-so judgmental on Darla-I’m like NEGRO-don’t go there! U aren’t exactly a saint either!😡
3. Charley & her mom are alike in many ways.
4. Charley’s mom vs aunt Vi-mutual respect may be inevitable but the shade is strong!!!!
5. Keke & Micah are so cute 2gether & I’m glad Kwke spoke her truth.
6. I like dubois but not feeling he/nova-their love scene didn’t get my tenderloins tingling.
7. Kudos 2 Charley for not becoming that angry black woman but I wish she would’ve zinged Ms thing w/the dismissive attitude.
8. I hope darla doesn’t have a relapse from the stress of the wedding, her parents, her past.
9. Aunt Vi may be down but I’m not counting her out.
10. Is Hollywood working 4 the enemy?
Im glad QS & the podcasts are back!
