Review: Adventure Time: The Original Cartoon Title Cards Seasons 3 & 4
What time is it?
It’s Adventure Time!
The charming, yet off kilter, adventures of Finn the Human (voiced by Jeremy Shada) and Jake the Dog (voiced by John DiMaggio) in the weird post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo has captured the hearts of its young viewers and even garnered a cult following amongst adults.
Adventure Time has always pushed the boundaries of animation and storytelling. Any fans of the show will enjoy the Adventure Time: The Original Cartoon Title Cards Season 3 & 4. The book is the second volume in the series and is the ultimate coffee table book filled with pages of title cards for the third and fourth seasons. The concept art for each featured episode card is visually stunning. Coupled with preliminary sketches as well as commentary from the show’s artists like Natasha Allegri, Gunnar Gilmore, Michelle Xin, and Rebecca Sugar (who would go on to create Steven Universe), the book provides a rare insight into the creative process behind an episode.
The show draws inspiration from many sources such as how the episode “Card Wars” is a riff on the popular trading card game “Magic The Gathering.” The episode card for “Paper Pete” is an homage to Dutch artist M.C. Escher’s dimension-bending staircases. Show artist Tom Herpich even acknowledges that he simply wanted the title card for “Goliad” to be as creepy as possible. The book also showcases art submitted by fans such as a very endearing character sketch by a little girl who loves the show.
This book is definitely a must for the diehard fans who’ve always been curious about the story behind the quirky art displayed at the beginning of each episode
