Rory Kinnear as The Doctor?

Exactly 11 days ago, BBC announced that Matt Smith is stepping down as the 11th Doctor during this year’s Christmas Special. The role of the 12th Doctor hasn’t been filled yet, but there are prevailing rumors about who’ll be stepping into the TARDIS next. According to multiple sources, Rory Kinnear – known stateside as Bill Tanner in the James Bond franchise – has been formally offered the iconic role. Whether or not this is true remains to be seen, as Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffatt has been notoriously tight-lipped about the casting, but it appears that even Mr. Kinnear has had about enough.

Or…has he?

According to BleedingCool.com, friend of the family Liz Buckley has denounced the rumors rather vociferously, and is loudly requesting people to stop asking about it. In fact, she’s saying the whole thing is a smokescreen by the BBC while they search for the right person. Again, whether or not this is true is open to debate, but…as much as I like Rory Kinnear – he’s a really good actor, and he was even enjoyable in the much maligned (but not by me) Quantum of Solace, I’d rather see someone with a bit of a manic personality in the role.

Someone like Richard Ayoade, perhaps?

Anyway, Matt Smith’s not done in the role just yet, and you can see him again with current companion Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) alongside the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) in the 50th Anniversary Doctor Who Special on November 23rd on BBC.
