Review: Saga #27

Remember how I fell in love with Saga from the first page? Well, the opening of this issue was like your husband doing something incredibly sweet, reminding you why you had the good sense to marry him to begin with.

Marko is having sex dreams that don’t have a happy ending. In his dream, naked and pregnant Alana turns into a demon of sorts and berates him for hitting her and losing their family.

Ghus and IV watch as Marko and Yuma lie on the floor, foaming at the mouth. Ghus is willing to do anything and call anyone to get them some help, but IV suggests tossing them out the airlock. Ghus’ not ’bout that life. They’re going to need Marko when they finally find Dengo and IV may be intimidating, but (no offense, Prince IV) Ghus is way more afraid of Marko than Prince Robot IV.

Back in his drug-induced dreams, Marko remembers being fierce and gruesome on the battlefield. So, savage that he mistakenly kills a man in front of the man’s young son. Marko’s dreams dive deeper into his past to the day he was whipped by his father for hitting a little girl who had been torturing their dog. The shame and disappointment from his father, in that moment, has never left Marko and it’s why he feels such guilt over hitting Alana with the bag of groceries.

His trip down memory lane is a particular problem because according to Yuma, the further back the drug takes them and the longer they stay that way, they’ll end of staying there for good. Ghus finally convinces IV to call a royal Robot doctor, who says the only way to help them is by making Marko and Yuma throw up the drugs. And it just so happens that Robot blood is particularly good at making other species vomit.

Ghus grabs a battle-ax because he is ’bout this life.

Marko’s dream start to go in reverse, bringing him back to meeting Alana and having Hazel. He awakens to find Yuma has been saved as well. She apologizes for giving him a bad batch of drugs his first time, but he thanks her. Those dreams reminded Marko of who he is and he now knows what he has to do:

Find the man who took his family, and then cut his head off.
