She-Hulk - Vol. 3 #4

Previously, “Issue #3

If Jennifer Walters ever decided to give up the lawyer thing, she’d be an incredible bounty hunter.

Although she got paid for her services by Kristoff Vernard, she received that money in Latverian Francs; that would be fine if it weren’t for the fact that the money is considered illegal currency in any country not named Latveria. On top of that, Walters is still seething at her Pyrrhic victory at the hands of Doctor Doom (she won asylum for her client, but the not-so-good Doctor came and snatched him away anyway). So, in order to get her head back together, she decides to leave New York and seek some legal counsel from the best attorney she knows: Matt Murdoch, a.k.a. Daredevil. Murdoch has relocated to San Francisco after being disbarred in New York due to being forced to reveal his secret identity. After giving Walters some sage advice - as well as teaming up with her to wipe up the floor with a few local thugs to let off some steam - she returns to New York with a new focus.

She also returns to New York painfully broke. She received a big check at the end of Issue #1, but that money is disappearing fast, and she has to do something to keep her fledgling law office afloat. She also needs to pay her staff, but that’s part and parcel of keeping the office afloat, no? With that in mind, she sets forth to finish what she started.

From the official byline from Marvel Comics: “Jen’s new client Kristoff Vernard has been kidnapped by his dad, DOCTOR DOOM! What does fellow lawyer (and recently outted Man Without Fear) MATT MURDOCK know about it? It’s an international jailbreak, She-Hulk Style, as Charles Soule (INHUMANITY) and Javier Pulido (HAWKEYE) take us to Latverian soil!”

If I have learned one thing in my short timeframe of reading this book, it would be to not mess with Jennifer Walters, because she will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Plus, she can turn into a big, green force of nature, so there’s that. Charles Soule has begun undercutting Walters’ Deadpan Snarker tendencies with a bit of sadness, as she sees what branching out on her own is doing to her professionally and personally. It’s nothing obvious, but it’s just a small hints here and there that point to her having a bit of darkness heading her way. She fights the good fight, but how long will that really last?

I’m looking forward to seeing where this journey takes her.
