Spider-Woman (2015) #3

Previously in Spider-Woman #2

I’m running out of ways to talk about this excellent series. Pretty soon I’ll just review it with smiley and heart emojis because I’ve run out of words.

Jessica gets the other expecting moms to help her (and themselves) get the drop on the Skrull soldiers and find relative safety in another part of the hospital. And because nothing is ever easy, Jessica has to maneuver through the hospital completing not-so-small missions so that Carol and her team can reactive the portals and rescue them.

First, Jess needs to locate a shelved scientist who should be able to talk them through the process without blowing everything and everyone to bits. Then, she needs to escort him to the necessary area to do it. Finally, Jess has to make her way to the sick Skrull child prince, who is the reason for the attack.

All of this provided Javier Rodriguez, Alvaro Lopez, and Rachelle Rosenberg with the opportunity to create some of the most beautiful pages I’ve ever seen in a comic book. Remember how much I loved the “how she did it” page in a prior issue? Well, they’ve outdone themselves here with several gorgeous pages that depict the action in a fluid and layered way - a true treat for the eyes. And they feature a superhero sporting a big pregnant belly with strength and grace.

The friendship between Jessica and Carol continues to be one of my favorites. Carol feels like shit (as she should), and Jessica’s annoyed (as she should be), but she’d rather focus on doing what needs to be done than listen to Carol apologize over and over again.

This was another solid issue with the mother of all cliffhangers. Pun intended.
