Supernatural - S10E13 - Halt & Catch Fire
This week’s episode takes place in Spencer, Iowa, where we have a couple of teens driving a pickup truck when they’re GPS system “trini” not only leads them to a dead end but also talks back to the driver, Billy, and warns the passenger, Janet, to get out, before driving the car off a bridge.
Dean is eating something called a Crossookie and not caring how it’s made but just knowing, “It’s awesome.” We get a quick recap on Castiel who, along with discovering riverboat gambling, is closing in on a location for Cain. The boys rehash the merits of going after Cain before Dean suggest checking the case from the cold open.
They arrive at the University, and Dean suffers sensory overdrive from all the coeds walking around the campus. While interviewing Janet, Dean learns one of the wonders of modern technology is a talking map, while his possessed car “Christine” reference goes over Janet’s head. They learn Billy had beef with his brother Joey who died in Afghanistan and conclude Joey’s ghost may be responsible. Since the pickup truck belonged to Joey before he died, they burn it down thinking that would excise the ghost.
We go to one of the college rooms where victim number 2, Julie, is chatting with someone who unnerves her writing the number 810 then stating she’ll pay for what she did. She tries to delete the chat, but it pops up again; she tries to unplug the computer, but I guess she forgets they have batteries, and it comes on again with the number 810 etched on the screen. She’s then trapped inside her room, before the laptop chokes her with the power chord.
As Dean is finding it hard to concentrate with all the booty walking by, they investigate the second death. They figure out both deaths were caused by a machine, but they can’t figure out how the two deaths are connected or how the ghost is jumping between machines. They interview Delilah who tells them Julie (and everyone else) knew Billy because he was president of STD (Sigma Theta Delta). She also tells them Julie was a sweet girl with no known enemies. Over lunch, while Dean’s wolfing down on college campus food, Sam is able to pull up the chat session Julie had before she was killed. They check out a house that starts with the number 810 and question a woman removing flowers from a lamppost. They find out the flowers are for her husband Andrew, who was killed at that location in a car crash nine months ago. She tells them that Delilah has been leaving the flowers.
Over second lunch, the boys are putting together all the clues but still can’t figure out how Andrew is haunting his victims.
Delilah is talking to some guy and is worried the feds are on to them. She suggests coming clean to the police, but the guy squashes that idea. Delilah wonders if karma is biting their ass, but the guy threatens her off. After she leaves, Andrew pays him a visit and kills him at 8:10 by blasting his improbably big speakers until the guy’s face explodes.
The boys deduce that Delilah and the victims were involved in Andrew’s death and get her to tell them what happened that night. She basically recaps the plot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. All four were in the pickup truck, while Billy was texting and driving; the car veers off the road and causes Andrew to crash into the lamppost. Billy, already having a DUI, drives off without helping or calling the police. They all convince Delilah to keep it a secret. (Told you). The boys prepare for the ghost but still can’t figure out how he’s killing them. Dean stays behind to protect Delilah, while Sam goes to investigate the site of the crash.
Dean tells Delilah he’s made his share of mistakes and the way he deals with it, besides whiskey and denial, is to try to make right by it. Sam calls having figured out Andrew is a progressive ghost and his moving around by Wi-Fi, as all the victims were killed by Wi-Fi devices. Dean is troubled to learn even ghosts are online, but before they can leave, Andrew pays them a visit. As Dean tries to break all the Wi-Fi connected devices, Sam visits Andrew’s wife. Dean and Delilah try to go to a place that doesn’t have a Wi-Fi Signal, but that turns out to be hard in a college building. Andrew’s wife reveals she’s been communicating with Andrew online, even though she knew he was a ghost; she didn’t care because it brought her husband back, but she’s noticed he stopped communication with her for a while. When he came back, he was more focused on revenge. She figured out her husband was probably responsible for the deaths, but she didn’t want to stop him because it would mean she would lose her husband again. Dean and Delilah locked themselves in a basement that is supposed to be Wi-Fi free, but they discover a phone in-between the couch cushions, which allows Andrew to enter the room. He goes after Delilah, despite Dean’s intervention. Dean texts Sam who has Andrew’s wife plead with Andrew to stop the killings and begs him to let go. Andrews listen and flashes away.
Then next day, Delilah goes to make peace with Andrew’s wife.
The bro-moment of the week has Dean saying he’s going to forget trying to find a cure for the Mark of Cain and just concentrate of solving cases. Sam tells him Cass is close to finding Cain and he can’t just give up, but Dean says he’s tired of living with false hope and is going to fight the urges of the Mark in his own way, until he can’t fight it anymore.
