The First Trailer for Edge of Tomorrow
Tom Cruise is a soldier trapped in a time loop which causes him to repeatedly fight a deadly battle with an invading alien race in Doug Liman’s sci-fi/action tentpole Edge of Tomorrow.
In this mixture of Groundhog Day, Source Code, and Elysium, Tom Cruise attempts, once again, to deliver a hit in the sci-fi genre-something he hasn’t had since 2005’s War of the Worlds. As unlikely as it may seem, he may actually have a good shot with Doug Liman behind the camera. Liman, who got his break directing Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn in the cult hit Swingers and went on to helm hit actioners The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Jumper, and the underrated Fair Game, directs Cruise, Emily Blunt, and Bill Paxton in this adaptation of the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

Does it look like a great movie? No, it does not. Does it look like a lot of fun? Yes, absolutely. First things first: mecha suits will always be cool. I don’t care if it’s Matt Damon reluctantly donning one in Elysium or Paul Giamatti hamming it up in one in The Amazing Spider-Man 2; no matter what the circumstance, mecha suits are cool, just like fezzes and bow ties. Secondly, the way these mecha suits are being used is very much a reflection of real world possibilities. Super-soldiers with mechanical exoskeletons? They’re developing that shit, right now. Thirdly, and most importantly, this film’s premise feels like a video game, what with respawning and what-have-you. Video game adaptations are almost never well-done, and it’s usually the films that aren’t direct adaptations which end up most accurately capturing the feeling of video games. I’ve read some complaints about the music used in the trailer, but I love it; with the electronically filtered voice, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Portal‘s “Still Alive”. All in all, I think Edge of Tomorrow (they even changed the badass title All You Need is Kill to one more fitting a “video game”) has a chance to be a very entertaining movie… then again, I felt the same way about Oblivion, and we all know how that turned out.
