The Mist - S1E7 - Over the River and Through the Woods

Previously on The Mist, “The Devil You Know”

At this point, we need to learn that the mist has purposely targeted this town because it’s attracted to horrible people. How else to explain that everyone on this show insists on being their absolute worst selves after just a few days in a crisis? Eve mentions the “nine meals from anarchy” theory, but these people have been awful since before there were rations.

Father God vs. Mother Nature

The folks at the church aren’t worried about rations or rescue; they’re all caught up in figuring out what it all means. In their search for answers it’s decided that Father Romanov and Nathalie will each give themselves to the mist. If he’s right, God will intervene and save him. He adorns himself in the clothing of his faith; Nathalie commits herself fully to nature and enters the mist nude. While she stands with her eyes closed, Romanov prays and is quickly confronted by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. One shots a hook into his chest and they ride off, dragging his screaming body behind them.

Welp. Nathalie returns to the group and declares herself nature’s messenger.

The Evil Within 

Kevin and crew can’t catch a break. They’re given shelter in the hospital’s psychiatric ward after Mia name drops her mother to an orderly, Nash. He respected her mother as someone who worked in the ward who didn’t have “any bad in her.” Since Bryan is still nursing a bullet wound and Kevin is still reeling from the effects of being drugged, they decide to make temporary camp in the ward.

Mia and Bryan clear the air and he reluctantly agrees to watch over her as she undergoes a medical detox. He straps her to a bed and they wait. Once the drugs take hold, she does as she said she would: she begs, she screams, she cries. Bryan is forced to relive the experiments performed on him at the base, but this also assists him in talking her through the worst of it.

Meanwhile, Adrian and Tyler (did I miss how he ended up in this part of the hospital with them?) continue to bond in a relationship that is so problematic and abusive it’s become uncomfortable to watch. Prompted to reveal the worst thing he’s ever done, Tyler confesses to beating and pissing on a gay boy who had a crush on Adrian. Adrian, again, forgives Tyler and the two embrace.

Nash, who it turns out isn’t an orderly but a patient of the ward, overhears their conversation and decides he must kill Adrian because of the evil inside of him; just as he’s killed several patients and staff already. In order to save Adrian, Kevin gives in to his own inner demons and beats Nash to death. Shaken, Tyler decides to stay at the hospital so he’ll be closer to home when things return to normal. Thankfully, Adrian leaves with Kevin, Bryan, and Mia.

A Few Whispers from Anarchy

One of the unintended consequences of Gus and Eve’s fake flyers is that some people, like security guard Kyle, think that they can ignore the rations rule since help is coming. With just two days worth of food left, this doesn’t fly with the others, including Gus who has a secret stash of food locked in his office. Shelley still blames Eve’s group for not only her daughter’s death, but causing the mist to descend in the first place. She tries convincing the others that Eve and company are hoarding food that should be theirs. Kyle, feeling sorry for her and also paranoid, has her back.

Alex continues to be the worst when Eve suggests sending Jay back to the original group. Remember: Eve believes this is the boy who raped her daughter just a few days ago. It makes complete sense that she’d feel this way and want to keep him away from Alex. What doesn’t make sense is Alex’s refusal to tell her mother she has doubts about Jay’s guilt. Instead, she threatens to return to the main group with Jay if Eve doesn’t let him stay.

Eve gives in because she wants to keep Alex close, especially after overhearing just how volatile things are with the bigger group. Their relationship is so dysfunctional that Alex won’t be honest with Eve, and Eve refuses to have a real conversation about the rap and Alex’s behavior for fear of widening the distance between them. For the people inside the mall, this mess may end up being a bigger danger than the mist.
