The Vampire Cookbook
Kelly Kerbey lives the life most women would dream of: She’s a successful author of a series of books, her boyfriend is a sexy famous actor, and her best friend is a supermodel who spoils her rotten. However, despite the fame, fortune, fans, and famous friends, Kelly’s life is far from perfect. She secretly hates the books she’s written - a series of supernatural young adult romance novels a la Twilight - and gives herself a hard time for “selling out.” And though she’s head-over-heels for her hunky boyfriend, self doubt makes her wonder how he could be head-over-heels for her.
Enter handsome and ancient James Dunworthy, a vampire who has a business proposition for Kelly: write a cookbook for his people or she’ll die. OK, so that’s less business proposition and more ultimatum. Either way, it works. Kelly finds herself thrust into a secret world existing alongside her very own - a world filled vampires and other mythical and deadly things.
Wherever you think this story might end up, you’re probably wrong. One of the many things that make The Vampire Cookbook such an enjoyable read is its ability to turn everything you think you know about the paranormal genre upside down. MJ Heiser doesn’t go for the obvious and it’s refreshing. The dialogue is sharp and funny, just like the story’s heroine. Even though the book features a vampire, supermodel, and mega-famous actor, the characters still manage to feel real: flawed, and oddly enough, human. The chemistry between Kelly and her best friend Celeste is probably the best, accurately capturing the dynamic between people who love each other the most and know how to push each other’s buttons better than anyone else. Another highlight is the book’s nod to the quirky city of Portland, Oregon. As a recent transplant to the city, I can tell you the book is dead-on in its description.
The Vampire Cookbook is a fast read because you’ll constantly tell yourself, “Just one more chapter,” whenever you must step away from it. The sexy situations, life or death encounters, and laugh-out-loud dialogue make this book the perfect summer read.
