The Vampire Diaries - S5E4 - For Whom the Bell Tolls

Previously on The Vampire Diaries: ‘Original Sin’

Driving Down Memory Lane

Damon and Stefan are cruising down the road trying to jar Stefan’s memory. Stefan’s read through two of his journals and still nothing. When Stefan guesses that Damon must be the “safe brother” and he’s the “fun brother,” Damon speeds up and purposely crashing the car and sending them both flying.

Caroline is going on a study date with Jesse to try and get on Dr. Maxfield’s good side. Elena approves of this plan.

Elana meets up with the boys at a bar and is a bit offended that Stefan doesn’t remember her and that Damon hasn’t filled him in.

Desperately Seeking Bonnie

Bonnie still doesn’t want Jeremy to tell everyone she is dead even though he’s sure that they’re going to wonder where she is and why she isn’t helping to get Stefan’s memory back. Matt calls Jeremy over because he’s all freaked out about losing time. He’s been sending Bonnie like, 300 emails all summer and Bonnie only wrote back twice. Jeremy doesn’t have a good answer so he just leaves.

Damon stops Stefan from ripping out the throat of the cute waitress at the bar. Today, Damon is being the “safe brother.”

Stefan and Elena try to recreate the day they met in school to help get his memory back. It’s not working, but they’re definitely flirting and connecting. When a guy leaves the gym with a head wound, Elena gets Stefan away before he can react to the blood. They boldly jump on the roof of the school, in broad daylight. Up there, he admits that he has figured out that they dated, but she has to fill him in on why they broke up: Elena changed when she became a vampire.

Jesse’s Girl

Caroline shares more flirting with Jesse while they study and he steals a kiss. Tyler who?

Jeremy tells Damon that Bonnie is dead. Damon is, at first, pissed because he knows that this news will destroy Elena, but he comforts Jeremy with a hug when the magnitude of what has happened sinks in. Oh, Damon.

Elena takes Stefan to wear she crashed. He tells her that he knows she’s doing all of it to keep his mind off the hunger and it’s working. But when he tries to kiss her, she tells him she’s with Damon, and he disappears after announcing that the hunger has returned.

Blood, Lies, and Videotape

Matt has set up video cameras to record what happens when he blacks out. He later watches himself turn into the passenger inside him, who warns him that friends will be coming for a blade so Matt better protect it with his life. To demonstrate that he means business, he cuts Matt’s hand and warns that if he doesn’t, next time it will be his throat.

Elena calls Damon and before he can tell her about Bonnie, she tells him Stefan is missing. Stefan has found Caroline and Jesse, but Caroline has to compel Jesse to go hide before Stefan can hurt him. When Caroline isn’t paying attention Stefan flies off and finds Jesse in a crypt. He bites him on the shoulder. Stefan starts pouring out his whole sad story to Jesse and wonders, “What’s the point of being good” before attacking him again. Caroline arrives, but not before Jesse loses a lot of blood. Stefan runs off and Caroline heals Jesse with her blood.

Jeremy goes over to Matt’s to tell him about Bonnie.

Stefan burns his journals and tells Damon and Elena that he doesn’t want to have anything to do with them. When Elena wishes that Bonnie were there to help, Damon breaks the bad news.

Ripper Hangover

Caroline meets up with Stefan the next day and learns that he hasn’t hurt anyone else. She tells him about Bonnie, but refuses to go into the details or else she’ll cry, because you know, heaven forbid anyone actually care about what happens to Bonnie on this show. She wishes she could trade places with Stefan so as not to hurt so much. He promises to be there for her.

Elena does break down in Damon’s arms. Then they all attend a memorial service for Bonnie out in the woods where they burn all of her stuff and ring a bell. It’s all very weird, but touching at the same time. Bonnie tells Jeremy to tell the gang that she will always be with them and then he relays special messages for each of them. And then someone started cutting onions. And then Tyler showed up and Bonnie says seeing them together was all she wanted and that she’d be okay.

*sniff sniff*

Dr. Maxfield exams Jesse, because you know, you should see your college professor when you pass out at a party. Anyway, Maxfield tells him that there are traces of vampire blood in his system and deduces that he was healed and then compelled to forget about it. He then injects Jesse with something to kill him so that Jesse will rise as a vampire. And then poor Jesse dies.
