If you’d told me that Legends of Tomorrow would have the best season premiere of all the DCTV shows, I’d have asked what you were smoking and if I could have some. Look, I love The Flash. It’s my jam. But this right here? So.Much.Fun.

Historian Nate Heywood (Zano) has discovered small changes in history that he links back to the Legends. But when he discovers reports of a strange aircraft crashing into NY waters in 1942, he enlists the help of the one person with the means to do it, the connection to care, and the experience to believe him: Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell).

They find the submerged Waverider keeping just one crew member in stasis: Mick Rory. He updates them and us on what the Legends had been up to since we last saw them. They traveled through time fixing the mistakes of the departed Time Masters. Even though they were warned to avoid 1942 (or they’d die), they ended up there anyway to stop Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) from detonating an atomic bomb. This pleases Sara since she’s been tracking Darhk for months with the hopes of killing him to avenge her sister’s death, and this pleases Stein because they’ll get to meet Albert Einstein (John Rubinstein), who they believe was kidnapped by Darhk in order to design the bomb two years ahead of history.

But the patriarchy is a motherfucker and it turns out Einstein’s ex-wife, Meliva Maric (Christina Jastrzembska) was also a physicist and genius. They save Einstein, but Darhk has already kidnapped Meliva and is forcing her to build the bomb.

Their first encounter with Darhk doesn’t go exactly as planned. Sara is intent of killing Darhk, but he holds his own. When Mick is injured, the team is forced to retreat. As Darhk watches Sara run off, he looks more fascinated than anything else.

Their second encounter ends much worse. To avoid death for the entire team as a torpedo targets their ship, Rip scatters the team to different points in time and leaves Mick in stasis. This is where things get a little too timey-wimey for Oliver, and he encourages Nate to assist Mick in tracking down the team. They eventually rescue Ray from a T-Rex 70 million years ago; Stein and Jax from having their court jesters jobs ended by a beheading in 821 England; and Sara from being burned at the stake for witchcraft (being a lesbian) in 1693 Salem. Unfortunately, Rip is gone. His final video message wishes them luck and hope to see them again at another point in time.

The team regroups and convinces Einstein to give Meliva public credit for her contributions so she’s just as lauded and protected as he is; they hope this will make it harder for Darhk to try again. However, they needn’t worry about that since his partner is bored with the atomic bomb and wants to move on. And his partner is none other than Eobard Thawne/The Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher).

I promise not to mention this every week, but I am so happy the Hawks are gone. They were just… bad. The team dynamic is flawless now. Very much aware that the team may have to continue without him one day, Rip had already begun training them (namely Jax) to handle the ship without him. Even though they still needed corralling on a mission (protecting King Louie XIII turned into Sara having sex with the queen and the team displaying their full array of powers), each member appears to be more confident in their roles.

It’s refreshing that Sara is filling the role most typically filled by a man. She’s a player. She likes sex. She’s also really good at being a badass. I’m totally here for Sara getting hers with no damn apologies. It’s also cool seeing Mick become more a real person and not just the drinking, fighting, stealing … well, he’s those things too, but it was a nice touch having him be the one to point out to Einstein that giving Meliva credit was simply the right thing to do.

I am beyond pumped for this season. The Reverse-Flash and Damian Darhk have been two of my favorite DCTV villains and I love the idea of them traveling through time and causing trouble. And it looks like the Legends will have backup in the form of the Justice Society of America. Nice.
