Love is complicated. Love is simple.
It’s simple and instant, like the moment you first lay eyes on your newborn niece. And it’s complicated when your first love returns home from Wakanda just in time to see you lock lips with another boy… who just happens to be a superhero like you. It gets further complicated when you hold your first love’s hand to keep him steady on his feet, and his girlfriend sees this and assumes the worst.
What’s a girl to do?
Ms. Marvel (the series and the character) took the highly unorthodox approach of sending Kamala straight to her religious advisor, Sheikh Abdullah. It’s refreshing developments like this that keep Ms. Marvel from being your typical comic book. Even better than having a teenage girl embrace the advice of a religious mentor is to have him not spew patriarchal bullshit in an attempt to keep her from feeling the very real emotions teenage girls will have. Then he gives her the best advice of all: be honest. (For more on how important and groundbreaking this is, check out the back matter of this issue.)
If teenage romantic entanglements aren’t your jam, fear not. Zoe’s crush on the new girl at school, problematic and bossy Kaylee Kirk comes with a bit of intrigue. The girl has a grip strong enough to put a dent in a metal locker.
P.S. Yay for bringing more of Wakanda to Jersey City in the form of Bruno’s roommate and friend, Kwezi.
