Outsiders - S2E4 - How We Hunt

Previously on Outsiders, “Banishment”

Y’all, I’m trying really hard to like G’Win, but it’s just not happening. If I’m honest, I’ve struggled to connect to this character from the beginning. I didn’t like the way she cheated on Lil Foster with Asa, then married Big Foster, and then tried to kill Big Foster in the most obvious “I’m tryna kill your ass” way possible.

This would all be easier to swallow (maybe) if I believed she did it all for the good of her clan, but she’s not exactly proving to be the best Bren’in. She announces her decision to let Big Foster stay, which doesn’t go over well since he’d just confessed to killing his own mother, their last Bren’in. Not only is she facing open questioning of her decisions (damn near every week), but it seems obvious to everyone but G’Win that Moregon is manipulating her, but to what end?

Their smokehouse is low on meat so G’Win bumps up their autumn hunt to prepare for an early and tough winter. Moregon offends Big Foster when she questions his method of hunting (guns), and she and her clan show him up when they return with the most kills. Later that night, someone burns the smokehouse down, destroying all of their newly gained meat and killing a member of the clan. All fingers point to Big Foster, but none more firmly than Moregon’s. Big Foster ain’t shit, but I don’t believe for one second he did it. Moregon even said that the fastest and easiest way to destroy a clan is to turn them against one another. If that’s her plan, the work was half done before she got there and G’Win’s apparent naïveté isn’t helping.

Wade keeps collecting Ls. Ledda leads activists in a protest against the coal mine, which forces Wade to publicly arrest her. She just lost her husband and she’s dying; she has nothing to lose. She’s spending what time she has left standing up for something she believes in. Here’s to hoping Wade develops a bit of backbone and does right by Lil Foster, who’s still cooling his heels in jail for a murder he didn’t commit.

Outsiders continued its realistic portrayal of unequipped young people dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. It’s a lot to process and what’s said isn’t always for the best, which we see when Sally Ann first tells Hasil. To be fair, his first thoughts of what it means for his already complicated life and how it’s not what he would have chosen for them is understandable. It’s just that it’s not what Sally Ann needed or wanted after climbing the mountain all damn night.

Unfortunately, G’Win won’t allow Sally Ann to stay. So you send away the pregnant girl but keep Big Foster’s duplicitous ass? I see you, girl. And she manipulates Hasil by reminding him of how much she relies on him. The plan is take Sally Ann back, and tell her he’s chosen to return to his family, but when the time comes, Hasil continues into town with Sally Ann. He better had.

Other Notes

  • The Kinnah women having sex with the border guards seemed like the explanation of how they manage to procreate without any men, but then they killed the poor guys before they could… finish. What the hell was that about?
  • Am I the only one who feels like Lil Foster needs to hurry up and come home? This prison storyline isn’t working for me.
  • If Asa doesn’t appear with one arm…. I’ma be pissed.
