The Originals - S4E11 - A Spirit Here That Won’t Be Broken

No Rest For The Weary
When you only have 13 episodes you have to move at a breakneck pace. Even though they just repaired Elijah’s broken psyche, the pendant is already cracking so if Freya can’t get Elijah back into his body his soul will be lost forever. The plan is to use The Hollow’s death to power the resurrection spell and this plan is two-pronged. Hayley will kill The Hollow with a dagger tipped with Hope’s blood; as a powerful witch and the last of The Hollow’s bloodline, Hope’s blood is deadly to Inadu. But she can’t be killed until the totem protecting her is destroyed. Anticipating this, Inadu is using her connection to Davina to blackmail Kol into protecting her totem.
Kol’s rather ingenious plan is to get Hope to break the link between Davina and The Hollow, but to do that he needs to keep his siblings distracted and charm his niece without seeming like a creeper. He (mostly) succeeds, until Klaus finds out he’s working with The Hollow and nearly kills him. It’s great watching Klaus recognize how loving Davina has changed his brother, but it’s annoying that Kol must plead to save Davina’s life. As much as Klaus has put Davina through, he owes her.
Still Star-Crossed
While Klaus is beating up Kol, Rebekah and Marcel are stuck together in one of Kol’s traps. This was a bright spot in a somewhat convoluted episode. Rebekah and Marcel go from trying to avoid the elephant (read: sexual tension) in the room, to actually blowing up the house they are in to avoid talking, to finally laying out all their grievances before making out. It’s as if you and your ex held on to centuries of “who hurt who” material to finally unleash after being stuck in an elevator together. It was glorious. I hope those two crazy kids can make it work.
Meanwhile Hayley and Freya are trying to kill The Hollow in a house of horrors and ex-lovers. Hayley is confronted by Jackson, who starts off his sweet self and soon turns murderous, blaming her for choosing Elijah over him. Similarly, Keelin is there to show Freya all her worse fears about Keelin dying because of her. By the time they confront Inadu, it’s no wonder that they don’t pick up on the blatant clues that they are playing right into The Hollow’s plan. It’s no surprise to anyone who didn’t spend the past hour talking to their dead lover when little Hope’s eyes burn blue at the end of the episode.
I just discovered that the actress playing The Hollow (Blu Hunt) will be Dani Moonstar in the X-Men: New Mutants movie. So far, her performance has been great and since this might have been the end of her run I can’t wait to see more from her in the future. The ending of this episode was no surprise as The Originals has always been about body-swapping and resurrections. Having Davina back is a definite win, but her running off with Kol without even leaving a note for Marcel left a bad taste in my mouth. Additionally, having The Hollow ensconced in Hope’s body is going to be tough since the young actress hasn’t shown the acting chops I’d hoped for. It looks like seeing Jackson has solidified for Hayley that being around the Mikaelsons isn’t good for Hope. It will be interesting to see where this custody battle goes especially when Hayley and Klaus realize they’re fighting over The Hollow and not their daughter.
