Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S4E1 - “The Ghost” | Starring: Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennett, Henry Simmons, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain de CaesteckerNatalia Cordova-Buckley, Gabriel Luna

Playing Catch Up

S.H.I.E.L.D. is now legit once more, but there are some changes: Coulson and Mack are now field agents tasked with tracking Inhumans; May trains new strike team agents; Fitz works on field gadgets and virtual training environments, Simmons is the new director’s SADIST (or special assistant to the director in science and technology) with a higher security clearance than May; and Daisy is hunting bad guys on her own, free of attachments and wearing lots of eyeshadow.

Ghost in the Machine

While tailing a gang of Aryan Brotherhood, Daisy discovers she’s not the only one after them. Enter Ghost Rider with his badass ’69 Charger and flaming head. Just in case you wondering how the new 10pm slot would affect storytelling, within the first few minutes “The Ghost” makes vicious and bloody work of the Aryans (blood spatter everywhere!), killing two, putting one in the hospital, and sparing one to interrogate later.

Shortly before the hospitalized gang member succumbs to the Ghost Rider’s touch (more blood; so much blood), Daisy quakes her way into his room hoping to learn more about his attacker. This puts her on S.H.I.E.L.D’s radar, and May sends Coulson and Mack to investigate - which puts her at odds with Simmons.

While no one trusts the new Director, Simmons has purposely positioned herself in a place of power. Keep your enemies close and all that. She instructs May to clean up her mess by sending the strike team out to call off Coulson and Mack.

Hothead

Daisy’s search for the mystery rider leads her to an auto salvage shop and Robbie Reyes (Luna). Between trading seismic blows and amid lots of fire, Reyes admits to leaving a trail of bodies, but claims it was all done as vengeance against those who deserved it - and he doesn’t decide, but whatever it is inside of him does.

Meanwhile, Mack and Coulson discover the connection between various Los Angeles gangs centers around the sale of a case which contents will bring enhanced beings to their knees. When members of a Chinese gang take a peek inside the case, they unleash a spirit that whispers in their ears, gets in their heads and turns them against each other.

Virtual Reality

Radcliffe, pardoned by the government, has spent his free time working on a humanoid robot named Aida. Even though Fitz discovers her naked in his apartment, Radcliffe insists he didn’t create her for pervy purposes. To make up for his past dealings with H.I.V.E, he created Aida to act as a diversion for agents in the field; she’ll put herself in harm’s way instead. Fitz agrees to help Radcliffe perfect the glitchy bot and insists they keep its existence from Simmons until they’re done.

Quick Hits

  • Mack, just let Yo-Yo rock your world, boo. Just let it happen.
  • Seeing May’s strike team being all lethal and efficient was cool, but I really wanted to see her kick some ass.
  • Reyes had a chance to kill Daisy and she begged him to do it. That girl needs a hug.
  • The contents of the box is out, but the team has the box to study. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the witch/spirit inside has infected May.
  • Fitz keeping secrets from Simmons. Not cool, man. Not cool. That never ends well.
  • Yo-Yo’s slipping Daisy S.H.I.E.L.D. bone regenerating pills and warns that using her powers could break or kill her. Damn. She really needs a hug.

Next week: “Meet the New Boss.”
