News Ticker

BluTuesday - August 11, 2015

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from settling into my new digs to bring you the latest releases to home media for August 11, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss the latest sequel to a YA novel and Tom Hardy.

Insurgent - Blu-ray + Digital HD
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 30%

In this follow-up to the 2014 film, we find Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) on the run from Jeanine (Kate Winslet) and the Erudite elite. The two are searching for allies and answers; Tris’ family sacrificed their lives for her, and she is bound and determined to find out why. This film, which also stars Daniel Dae Kim, Jai Courtney, and Octavia Spencer, is available in both a three disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version. This series has been much maligned since its inception, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time; in fact, the opposite is true. Give it a shot.

Child 44 [DVD + Digital]
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 24%

In the Soviet Union of 1953, secret police officer Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy) is investigating the murder of a friend’s son. During the investigation, he begins to suspect that his superiors had something to do with it. When he questions his superiors, they demote him and send him and his wife (Noomi Rapace) to a provincial outpost. Once there, they discover that things are a whole lot more complex than they initially thought, and they may have a serial killer on the loose. This film, which also stars Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, and Jason Clarke, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is a complex and twisted thriller, and I highly recommend giving it a go.

Strike Back : The Complete Third Season
Season three of this Cinemax exclusive thriller kicks off with the focus squarely on both Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapelton). These two troubled soldiers - Michael has to deal with some personal demons and Damien is a disgraced former Special Forces soldier seeking redemption - travel the world to put a stop to global terrorism. This series, which also stars Michelle Lukes, is available in both a three disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. This series is a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you anxious for more.

Orphan Black: Season Three
Tatiana Maslany returns in this clone-hopping adventure from the BBC. When Sarah (Maslany) begins scorching the earth to find her daughter, she comes in direct conflict with Rachel (Maslany). This has the unintended effect of bringing all of the clones (Maslany, Maslany, and Maslany) into the conflict, and no one is safe. This series, which also stars Tatiana Maslany, Dylan Bruce, and Jordan Gavaris, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. This series is absolutely incredible, and there’s no doubt in my mind that this is my pick of the week.

Well, that’s all I got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to talk about? Please feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
