BluTuesday - August 23, 2016

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from the first day of school to bring you the newest releases to home media for August 23, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss a cold war, Los Angeles in the 70s, the return of a cult icon, time travelers, the Devil, Mexico in the 70s, creepy science, and a damn dumpster. As you can see, we have a lot to get to, so let’s just jump right in.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 17%

When Freya the Ice Queen (Emily Blunt) decides to bring her sister Ravenna (Charlize Theron) back to life and conquer the Enchanted Forest, all hope seems to be lost. But, when the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and his lover Sara (Jessica Chastain) are made aware, they set forth on an epic battle for the sake of all mankind. This film, which also stars Nick Frost, Sam Claflin, and Sheridan Smith, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. I don’t really know what much to say about this movie; it was in and out of the theaters before you could blink, but it did have some decent action sequences, and Emily Blunt kicks all sorts of ass as an Elsa cosplayer. So, give it a watch.

The Nice Guys (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating; 91%

Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) and Holland March (Ryan Gosling) are two private eyes in the swinging 70s of Los Angeles, and they stumble onto a major conspiracy. While investigating the supposed suicide of a former porn star who’s star has faded, they find themselves against the underbelly of LA…and each other. This film, which also stars Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer, and Margaret Qualley, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is a quirky little movie that is a whole lot of fun to watch. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe give virtuoso performances, and Angourie Rice steals the show. Give it a watch.

Ash vs. Evil Dead: The Complete First Season

Thirty years after saving the world with his chainsaw hand and his boomstick, Ash (Bruce Campbell) has settled into his role as a responsibility dodging aging lothario. But, when Ruby (Lucy Lawless) comes around and informs him that the Evil Dead are back, he has no choice but to step in the fray. After all, it seems that Destiny has no desire to release him from its Evil grip. This series, which also stars Ray Santiago, Dana DeLorenzo, and Jill Marie Jones, is available in a two disc Blu-ray version and a two disc DVD version. If you’ve seen any of the Evil Dead movies, you know what you’re in for. Watch this and have a laugh.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete First Season

When the fate of the world is at stake, time traveler Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) assembles a motley crew of heroes and villains with one goal in mind: stop the evil Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) who not only threatens the fate of the world, but the fate of all of time and space. This series, which also stars Caity Lotz, Wentworth Miller, and Brandon Routh, is available in a two disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a four disc DVD version. This show had its ups and downs, but it’s a pretty solid show. Check it out.

Lucifer: The Complete First Season

Disillusioned with his role as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) abdicates his throne and heads for the beauty of Los Angeles. When he witnesses a beautiful pop star’s brutal murder, he finds himself feeling compassion for the first time in forever, and – alongside LAPD homicide detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) – he begins to wonder if there’s indeed redemption for the Devil. This series, which also stars Kevin Alejandro, D.B. Woodside, and Lesly-Ann Brandt, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. It takes a great cast of characters to make anyone want to feel for someone as evil as Lucifer, but this cast pulls it off.

Narcos: Season One

This series tells the story of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) from the start of his cocaine empire to his escape from La Catedral prison. Told from the perspective of DEA agent Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook), it documents Escobar’s rise and fall in brutal fashion, leaving nothing to chance or the imagination. This series, which also stars Pedro Pascal, Joanna Christie, and Maurice Compte, is available in a three disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a four disc DVD + Digital Copy version. This show is very good and very gripping, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat from episode to episode. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

The Strain: The Complete Second Season

The epidemic that has turned much of New York into horrifying creatures continues to build up during the second season of this acclaimed horror series. Doctors Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) work to create a biological weapon to destroy the creatures, Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley) searches for an ancient book that may have answers to how to kill the sinister Master (Jack Kesy), and the Master is creating more bloodthirsty monsters to aid in his quest for global domination. This series, which also stars Kevin Durand, Sean Astin, and Natalie Brown, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a four disc DVD version. This show is utterly horrifying, and it’s something that I’ll never watch. If you decide to, have fun with that.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Sixth Season

The sixth season of the critically acclaimed series begins with the survivors in dire straits; Alexandria is surrounded by walkers, there’s dissent within the community, and then there’s the Glenn situation. They fight for their lives, but are completely unaware for what’s in their future. This series, which stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, and Danai Gurira, is available in a five disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a five disc DVD version. What more can I say about this show that hasn’t already been said? If you’re in from the beginning, you’re gonna be in now. Watch it and enjoy.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
