What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from plotting out the last bits of Christmas shopping to bring you the latest releases to home media for December 22, 2015. In this week’s episode we discuss the story of the boy who would be a hero, legally illegal aliens, and angels and demons. Get got quite the list here, so let’s just get to it.
Pan (PG)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 27%
Peter (Levi Miller) is your average 12 year old; rambunctious, wild, and completely out of control. This would be a bit of trouble in this day and age, but in Victorian era London, it’s even worse. But, he soon finds himself transported to another realm called Neverland. Together, with Tiger Lilly (Rooney Mara) and James Hook (Garret Hedlund), they must take on the fearsome Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman), and Peter must embrace his destiny: he must become the Pan. This film, which also stars Adeel Akhtar, Amanda Seyfried, and Nonso Anozie, is available in a single disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a single disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Let’s cut to the chase here: this is a gorgeous film, but it’s also incredibly over the top. I won’t address the casting controversy over Tiger Lilly, because that should go without saying in 2015, but it’s still something that knocks the appreciation down a peg or five. Still, there’s a campy movie here if you’re willing to embrace the lunacy.
Defiance: Season Three
When Nolan (Grant Bowler) and Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) make their return to Defiance after surviving the utter annihilation of New York City, they find their town is on the brink of war with the Votanis Collective and their leader, General Rahm Tak (Lee Tergesen). In order to save their town, they turn to the Omec, a splinter cell of the Votan race with their own issues. Will this be enough to save their home, or will this signify the end of Defiance as we know it? This series, which also stars Julie Benz, Tony Curran, and Jaime Murray, is available in a three disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a three disc DVD version. I’ve always been a fan of sci-fi, and this is no exception to that rule. This is an edge-of-your-seat series, and it’s worth your time. In fact, this is my Pick of the Week, and I highly recommend it.
Dominion: Season Two
The war to save humanity from the Archangel Gabriel (Carl Beukes) rages on in the second season of this hit series. Alex (Christopher Egan) travels to New Delphi, a human settlement with a not-so-elegant past, in order to broker an alliance with their surly leader. Back in Vega, Claire (Roxanne McKee) finds herself at odds with the disgraced David (Anthony Head) and his allies. The Archangel Michael (Tom Wisdom) finds a town called Mallory, a place untouched by the raging war, and what could be the greatest mystery of them all. This series, which also stars Luke Allen-Gale, Kim Engelbrecht, and Shivani Ghai, is available in a three disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a three disc DVD version. This is a fun series, and it’s definitely better than the film that spawned it. Definitely check this out.
