BluTuesday - February 10, 2015

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from Valentine’s Day prep (which will involve me going to work) to bring you the latest releases to home media for February 10, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss the media doing anything for ratings, the CIA, the next phase in LEGO and DC, life in the key of Maine, and Edie Falco. We have a lot to get to, so let’s just dive right in.

Nightcrawler (Blu-ray + DVD + DIGITAL HD with UltraViolet)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%

Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a man who is down on his luck. Desperate to find a job, he takes on the role of a nightcralwer - a member of a freelance camera crew that prowls the underbelly of Los Angeles to find the grimiest, dirtiest stories. With the help of Nina (Renee Russo), he becomes one of the best nightcralwers out there, but it does come with a heavy price. This movie, which also stars Bill Paxton, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This movie is all on Jake Gyllenhaal’s shoulders, and he carries it like a champ. It’s a gritty, noir-like film, and it’s my pick of the week.

Kill the Messenger

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 77%

What happens when you cross the CIA? Bad things, man; bad things. Jeremy Renner stars as Gary Webb, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who stumbles on the CIA’s putting crack on the streets, as well as them turning a blind eye to smugglers bringing cocaine into the country. His continued investigations take him to the highest offices in the land, and he learns that poking the wrong bear could have far-reaching consequences. This movie, which also stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Liotta, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is one of those films that is so wrought with detail that it’s almost unbelievable - except for that it actually happened. This is something that’s certainly worth your time.

LEGO: DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD UltraViolet Combo Pack)

Bizarro has always been an odd bird. In this movie, he acidentally creates a bizarro version of the established Justice League. However, when Darkseid threatens the world, it’s up to the Justice League and their backwards counterparts to save the day. This movie, which features the voices of Troy Baker, Phil Morris, Nolan North, Khary Payton, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy with a Batman minifigure, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. LEGO is taking over the world, folks; and I’m okay with that. I will bow down to our blocky overlords. This is fun for all ages, so give it a watch with the kids…or, without. I won’t judge.

Olive Kitteridge

Frances McDormand stars as Olive Kitteridge, a rather unpleasant but well-meaning math teacher (even though such math teachers don’t exist) in Maine. Over the course of this four part miniseries, we get to see Olive’s life unfold and witness her ups and downs, as well as life with her husband Henry (Richard Jenkins) and son Christopher (John Gallagher, Jr.). This series, which also stars Rosemarie DeWitt (she’s busy!), Peter Mullan, and Bill F. Murray, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a two disc DVD version. I’m biased when it comes to Maine (admittedly pretty, but I stuck out like a sore thumb), but this is a well-meaning series. I think it’s worth someone checking it out.

Nurse Jackie Season 6 [Blu-ray]

The saga continues! Jackie Peyton (Edie Falco) has fallen off the wagon and started using drugs again, but she’s not alone in this one; her daughter Grace (Ruby Jerins) - who has started living with her father Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) has started using as well, plus she gets arrested for shoplifting. On top of that, her boyfriend Frank (Adam Ferrera) wants to move in with her. This series, which also stars Bobby Cannavale and Julie White, is available in a two disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version. This packaging is freaky. Other than that, this show seems to get more and more interesting as time progresses. That being said, it certainly guarantees to be a fun ride all the way to the end.

Well, that’s all I got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
