What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from basking in the glow of Black Panther to bring you the latest releases to home media for February 20, 2018. In this week’s episode, we discuss an ill-begotten comedy, a proud educational system, a regeneration, and a mysterious town. Let’s get started.

Daddy’s Home 2 (PG-13)
Metascore: 30

In this sequel to the 2015 film, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and Brad (Will Ferrell) have successfully navigated the realm of co-parenting. However, when Brad’s dad Don (John Lithgow) and Dusty’s dad Kurt (Mel Gibson) come to visit for the Christmas holidays, things get topsy-turvy real quick. This film, which also stars Linda Cardellini, John Cena, and Alessandra Ambrosio, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version, and a single disc DVD version. I’m not entirely sure who was asking for this movie, but we got it anyway. I’m even less sure who was clamoring for more Mel Gibson, but…we got it anyway. This is the quintessential “I mean, I guess…” movie.

Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been a haven for Black intellectuals, artists and revolutionaries; the greatest minds of the fight for Civil Rights matriculated in those halls. This PBS documentary tells the story of the birth of the HBCUs and their importance in not only African-American history, but in history as a whole. This documentary, which is directed by Stanley Nelson Jr., is available in a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. I have a soft spot for HBCUs due to my attending Alabama State University for a couple of years prior to joining the military. This documentary is an eye opening experience and it’s one that shouldn’t be missed.

Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time

The story of the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) comes to an end in this Christmas special, and he’s joined by the most unlikely of companions: the First Doctor (David Bradley). Stranded on an icy landscape, they have to solve the mystery of why glass people are stealing people from time, as well as wonder why a World War I general (Mark Gatiss) has been removed from the battlefield to play a role in the tale. This special, which also stars Nikki Amuka, Pearl Mackie, and Jodie Whittaker, is available in a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. This is a sweet and fitting end to Peter Capaldi’s run, as well as a farewell to showrunner Steven Moffatt, frequent collaborator Mark Gatiss, and composer Murray Gold. It’s definitely worth a watch.

Midnight, Texas: Season One
Metascore: 50

Welcome to Midnight, a town in Texas where being normal is absolutely abnormal. Based on the series of novels by Charlaine Harris, this series takes a look at how entities from different walks of life (vampires, witches, psychics, angels, and assassins) come together to protect each other from outside influences threatening to tear them apart. This series, which stars François Arnaud, Dylan Bruce, and Parisa Fitz-Henley, is available in a two disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. This is a different type of show; not one you’d expect on network TV, but here you are. If you’re a fan of the supernatural, this is the show for you.
