What’s going on, ProFans? Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from preparing for my trip home to bring you the latest releases to home media for January 27, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss angry tanks, lawyering down home, an unexpected animated holiday film, and high society. All set? Let’s go.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 78%
Brad Pitt returns to World War II; only this time, he’s not a Basterd. Pitt plays an Army sergeant nicknamed Wardaddy, and he takes a five man squad in a Sherman tank and tries to take the fight to the heart of Nazi Germany. This movie, which also stars Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthanl, Jason Isaacs, Michael Peña, and Shia LaBoeuf, is available in both a single disc Bluray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is an unflinching look at the war from the eyes of a single battalion, and it’s incredibly brutal to watch. I still recommend everyone give it a look, though.

Everyone’s darling Robert Downey, Jr. has returned to do a different type of movie. He plays big city lawyer Hank Palmer who returns home to face his estranged father, Judge Joseph Palmer (Robert Duvall). While there, he ends up having to defend his father, as he has been charged with murder. This movie, which also stars Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton, and Vincent D’Onofrio, is available in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This movie gets a lot of heat for being too schmaltzy, but sometimes a bit of schmaltz is a good thing. Not everything can be melodramatic or action-packed. Plus, Duvall has been nominated for an Academy Award, so that’s something…right?

And now, for something completely different…Charming Potato, I’m sorry - Channing Tatum stars in this animated look at a Mexican holiday. Tatum plays Manolo, a conflicted and unexpected hero who sets off on a quest to save his village and win the heart of the woman he loves. This movie, which also stars Zoe Saldaña, Ice Cube, and Diego Luna, is available in three disc 3D Bluray/Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. This movie is amazing, and it’s something that hasn’t been done in mainstream cinema before. It’s good to get on the ground floor of something amazing. It’s also good that this movie is my pick of the week.
Masterpiece: Downton Abbey Season 5
As 1924 looms large, things at Downton Abbey are changing forever. A new Labour government looms large, and the traditions the Abbey have held for generations appear to be going extinct. Everyone, from the highest of high society to the lowest of the servants, has to take a look at where they stand in the world and how the new social changes will affect them. This series is available in both a three disc Bluray version and a three disc DVD version. If you’ve been keeping up with the series from day one, then you’ll fall right in. Otherwise, I recommend starting from the beginning and working your way up.
