What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from adjusting to my new work schedule to bring you the latest releases to home media for June 6, 2017. In this week’s episode, we discuss the tale as old as time, The Doctor, vampires, and a new type of religious leader. Let’s get to it.
Beauty and the Beast (PG)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 71%
Belle (Emma Watson) is an intelligent, independent, and beautiful young woman who exchanges her freedom for her father Maurice’s (Kevin Kline) in the castle of the dreaded Beast (Dan Stevens). Along the way, she begins to transform the Beast and those around him both inside and out. This film, which also stars Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. If you’ve seen the animated movie, then you’ve seen this one. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it; what it does mean is that you should temper your expectations. All in all, it’s a beautiful movie; just don’t expect a reinvention of the wheel.
Doctor Who: Series Ten, Part 1
The Doctor is back in the first half of the explosively popular BBC series. The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) has been charged with protecting a mysterious vault underneath a university under the watchful eye of Nardole (Matt Lucas). But, when he meets Bill (Pearl Mackie) his sense of adventure is awakened, and he begins has adventures anew. This series, which also stars Stephanie Hyam, Nicholas Burns, and David Suchet, is available in a two disc Blu-ray version and a two disc DVD version. The first half of this season has contained some of the best episodes in the show’s return, and I think this is a must for any Doctor Who fan.
Van Helsing: Season One
In the near future, vampires are back and causing havoc. Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton), a descendant of the great vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, is brought back from the dead to save civilization, thanks to her blood being the only thing that can reverse the vampire plague. This series, which also stars Jonathan Scarfe, Christopher Heyerdahl, and Rukiya Bernard, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a four disc DVD version. This is an entertaining series that’s worth checking out.
The Young Pope
Lenny Belardo (Jude Law) makes history by becoming the first American Pope in history. Now known as Pius XIII, he is using his position to find a God for both mankind and himself. This series, which also stars Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando, and Javier Cámara, is available in a three disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a three disc DVD version. This show is controversial for it’s subject matter, but it’s still something that’s worth checking out to make your own opinions. At the very least, you’ll have a good time watching Jude Law do his thing.
