BluTuesday - May 23, 2017

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from bidding adieu to my school’s graduating eighth graders to bring you the latest releases coming to home media for May 23, 2017. In this week’s episode, we discuss horror in real life, a life cut short, the end of an era, a movie with an unnecessary protagonist, and a new entry in DC’s animated universe. Let’s get started

Get Out (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 99%

Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) and Rose Ermitage (Allison Williams) have reached the meet-the-parents phase of their burgeoning relationship. In the beginning, Chris sees Allison’s family’s attempts at being over accommodating as their way at being accepting of their daughter’s interracial relationship, but he soon discovers that it’s worse than he could have possibly imagined. This film, which also stars Catherine Keener, Bradley Whitford, and Marcus Henderson, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is a great film that - despite one troll reviewer - is considered one of the best of the year, and it’s certainly worth your time.

I Am Heath Ledger (NR)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 90%

I Am Heath Ledger is a look at the life of the beloved actor who’s life tragically came to an end too soon. It features interviews from friends and coworkers, and shows how he lived and played by his own rules to become a star the likes of which we haven’t seen before. This documentary, which features interviews from Naomi Watts, Ben Mendelssohn, and Ang Lee, is available in a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. Heath Ledger was on the way to becoming one of my favorite actors, and this is an intimate look at someone who was on the way to becoming one of the best. Check it out.

Logan (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating:92%

In the year 2029, Mutants are on the verge of extinction. In a quest to survive, Logan (Hugh Jackman) is making ends meet by serving as a caretaker for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart) by day, and a limo driver by night. But, when a mysterious girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) is dropped on his doorstep, Logan has to become the Wolverine again to protect her and find a light in the darkness that permeates his life. This film, which also stars Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and Richard E. Grant, is available in a three disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a three disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD + Digital Copy version. I may not be the biggest fan of the X-Man movies, but Hugh Jackman’s Logan has been a mainstay in the genre. At the very least, check it out of that.

The Great Wall (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 33%

Matt Damon plays William Garin, a mercenary who is hired by the Chinese government to help defend the eponymous Great Wall against monsters who threaten not only it, but threaten all of humanity. This film, which also stars Tian Jing, Hanyu Zhang, and Eddie Peng, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. Sorry about the short synopsis; I can only work with what they gave me. As far as this movie goes? This is the hardest of passes.

Vixen: The Movie (NR)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: NR

Based on the DC comics character of the same name, Vixen tells the story of Mari McCabe (Megalyn Echikunwoke), an orphan who lost her parents to violence in the war-torn land of Zambesi. Deciding not to let the terrors of life around her dictate her, she uses her family’s Tantu Totem to gain the powers of any animal, be it the strength of a gorilla to the flight of an eagle. She uses her abilities to fight crime not only in her adopted hometown of Detroit, but throughout the world if needed. This film, which also features the voices of Grant Gustin, Carlos Valdes, and Stephen Amell, is available in a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. I’ve seen these shorts on the CW Seed app, and they’re really very good. The fact that they’ve finally put it all together in a feature-length film version is icing on the cake. Check it out.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
