BluTuesday - May 13, 2014

What’s going on, ProFans? Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from watching Frozen on an infinite loop to bring you the latest releases to home media for May 13, 2014. In this week’s episode, we discuss a sexy monster, shenanigans at a women’s prison, Logan, and the sexiest sounding AI since EDI. All comfy? Let’s jump right in.

I Frankenstein (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 4%

The explosive thriller takes place 200 years after Dr. Frankenstein’s shocking creation came to life. Celestial forces name the creature Adam, and arm him with weapons to defeat the demons that are constantly seeking his destruction. However, soon Adam finds himself in the middle of a war over the fate of humanity and discovers that he also holds the key that could destroy humankind. This movie comes in a two-disc 3D Bluray/Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single-disc DVD version. I like Aaron Eckhart; I really do. I don’t know how I feel about him playing Frankenstein’s monster, though. To each his own, though…

Orange Is the New Black: Season 1
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 90%

Orange Is the New Black follows engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman, whose wild past comes back to haunt her and results in her arrest and detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper trades her comfortable New York life for an orange prison jumpsuit and finds unexpected conflict and camaraderie amidst an eccentric group of inmates. This series comes in both a three-disc Bluray + Digital Copy version and a four-disc DVD version. I have yet to complete this season, but it’s only because I have yet to find out how to clone myself in three different ways. That being said, I like what I saw, and so will you.

Marvel Knights: Wolverine Weapon X: Tomorrow Dies Today

It’s the debut of an all-new, all-different Deathlok. Killer cyborgs have come from the future to kill the heroes of today, while Wolverine embarks on an international pub crawl with a certain recently reborn Sentinel of Liberty. Beer and bullets galore! From Jason Aaron and Ron Garney, both Eisner Award nominees, comes an epic battle between the world’s favorite Mutant and Demolisher. This is only available in a single-disc DVD version. Y’know what? I’m suffering from Wolverine fatigue right now, and I can’t muster up the energy to care about this movie. I like Marvel, but I can’t with this one right now.

Her (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 94%

Set in Los Angeles in the slight future, Her follows Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive and unique entity in its own right. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice (Scarlett Johansson) who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. This movie comes in both a two-disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy and a single-disc DVD version. This is a lovely movie filled with splendid acting, and it’s my pick of the week.

Well, that’s all I got for this week. I’d also like to take this time to wish my wife a happy 10-year anniversary today, and here’s to many more. Now, are there any questions or comments for me? Did I miss anything you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
