What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from lamenting the disappearance of Fall again to bring you the latest releases to home media for September 19, 2017. In this week’s episode, we discuss an unconventional love story, a great warrior, a return to form, the end of a new classic, and a fascinating reboot. Let’s get started.

The Big Sick (R)

Metascore: 86

Inspired by the real-life romance between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon, this film tells the story of Kumail (Nanjiani) and Emily (Zoe Kazan) from their early beginnings from a one night stand after a stand-up set to a full blown romance - much to the chagrin of Kumail’s traditional Muslim parents. When Emily falls ill, Kumail has to navigate the crisis with her parents Beth (Holly Hunter) and Terry (Ray Romano) and deal with the dilemma of siding with his family or going with his heart. This film, which also stars Anupaum Kher, Adeel Akhtar, and Rebecca Naomi Jones, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. This is a pretty sweet story; I recommend it for the couples in the audience.

Wonder Woman (PG-13)

Gal Gadot stars at Princess Diana, the heir to the throne of Themyscira, who has the heart of a warrior, but no way to truly show it. When World War I fighter pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crash lands on the normally secluded island, Diana learns of a new world with new dangers. Leaving her home to fight alongside man, Diana learns her true powers and her true destiny. This film, which also stars Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, and Elena Anaya, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, and a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version. This film shows how the DC Extended Universe can be a force to be reckoned with if placed in competent hands, and there are none more competent than Patty Jenkins. I highly recommend this.

Arrow: The Complete Fifth Season

As the fifth season of CW’s flagship superhero show begins, newly appointed mayor Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) finds himself fighting battles on two fronts for the life of Star City. With John Diggle (David Ramsey) back in the Army and his sister Thea (Willa Holland) not willing to put back on the hood, it’s up to Oliver and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and a handful of new recruits to take down the biggest threat they’ve ever faced in Prometheus; a villain who seems to be ahead of Team Arrow’s every move. This series, which also stars Rick Gonzalez, Echo Kellum, and Paul Blackthorne, is available in a four disc Blu-ray + Digital HD version and a five disc DVD version. After stumbling a bit in seasons three and four, Arrow came back with a bang in season five. I was riveted from beginning to end, and I highly recommend it.

Bates Motel: Season Five

Two years after the death of his beloved mother Norma (Vera Farmiga), Norman (Freddie Highmore) has completely slipped into full blown psychosis. To those on the outside, he’s a well-adjusted member of the White Bay community, but behind closed doors, he continues to get black-out violent as the “Mother” personality begins to take over his mind completely. Meanwhile, Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) is on a hunt for vengeance to take down Norman and avenge the loss of his love. This series, which also stars Olivia Cooke, Kenny Johnson, and Nicola Peltz, is available in a two disc Blu-ray + Digital HD version and a three disc DVD version. This is a fitting end to a beloved thriller, and it’s worth watching to see how it all plays out.

Lethal Weapon: The Complete First Season

Roger Murtaugh (Damon Wayans) and Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford) are on the beat in this TV adaptation of the action-comedy film series. Riggs is a Navy SEAL turned police detective out of El Paso dealing with the loss of his wife and unborn son by diving headfirst into the line of fire, and Murtaugh is a veteran detective returning to the force after suffering a nearly fatal heart attack. While the partnership appears to be doomed from the start, the devil-may-care attitude and the by-the-books vet pairing could be crazy enough to work. But, can they work together to clean up the mean streets of LA, or will they kill each other first? This series, which also stars Jordana Brewster, Keesha Sharp, and Kevin Rahm, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a four disc DVD version. This is a funny show that pays homage to the classic films while putting their own spin to it. Give it a watch.
