Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) is still doing the absolute most with the least. After everyone is rocked by Ulysses’ latest vision of Miles Morales killing Steve Rogers, Carol wants to detain Miles “for his own safety.” While everyone yells (mainly Tony, asking Carol if she’s lost her damn mind), Captain America approaches the devastated Spider-Man. These were some of the best panels I’ve ever had the privilege of viewing. Miles, with his mask pulled up and only exposing the lower half of his face, tells Steve he would never do anything like what they saw. Steve assures him that he knows that, and reminds Miles that who he is and what he stands for means something to many people.

It’s this kind of care and compassion that has been missing from the series so far. Everyone has picked a side (and some jump ship this issue), there’s been death, yelling, and betrayal, but no one has stopped to think how they can prevent these visions from occurring without trampling on people’s civil rights. Carol’s desire to keep peace and save lives is honorable, but her methods? Not so much.

When Tony instructs Thor to take Spider-Man home, Carol tries to stop her and a few more heroes abandon her cause. T’Challa is pretty much over this nonsense and realizes if you’re on the side opposing Captain America, you need to reevaluate your life choices. As Tony later says, “T’Challa, I think I speak for everyone when I say: I’m kind of in love with you.” Word, Tony. Word.

If you’ve been following Spider-Woman and Ms. Marvel, you know that both Jessica Drew (Carol’s best friend) and Kamala Khan have recently switched sides as well. With her best friend and her namesake both telling her she’s wrong, you’d think Carol might do some reevaluating herself, but this seems unlikely as Maria Hill, the X-Men, and the Guardians of the Galaxy are all offering her firm support. Girl, I guess.

The next issue seems to focus heavily on Miles’ next moves and I can’t wait to see what they are, especially with the younger heroes (The Champions) breaking away from the adults to have each other’s backs.
