Emmy Nomination Breakdown
The primetime Emmy nominations were announced yesterday. There were the usual contenders (30 Rock *yawn*), but also a few surprises (SEVEN lead actresses in a comedy series?)
Here are my picks for who should win and who will win in some of the major categories.
Best Comedy Series
Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, Modern Family, Girls, The Big Bang Theory, Veep
Who Should Win: I have to go with Modern Family for being consistently funny. Of all the nominees, it’s the only one that, I find, never misses a beat. Although HBO’s Girls has received a lot of buzz - and backlash - it doesn’t deliver the laughs the way the rest of the nominees do.
Who Will Win: Modern Family
Best Drama Series
Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Homeland
Who Should Win: This is like asking me to choose my favorite child! Though picking this one isn’t completely impossible. Game of Thrones, all the way. Even episodes I’d rate a 7 (of which there are MAYBE two out of both seasons) out of 10 are infinitely better than most shows on television. I’d say that a 7 Game Thrones is on par with a 10 of the other nominees. Of course, the show runners have it easy because the source material weaves together complex characters in compelling storylines. It should win for the Blackwater episode of season two alone.
Who Will Win: Homeland. I enjoy the show, but I don’t have the massive hard-on for it that everyone else does. When it wins, I will flip a table.
Best Actor in a Drama Series
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Damien Lewis (Homeland), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey)
Who Should Win: As much as I’d like to see Jon Hamm, well, do anything, I think this one should go to Cranston who transforms so completely into cancer-striken chemistry teacher turned meth-maker so effortlessly, I almost don’t recognize him when I see him on talk shows. Breaking Bad’s fourth season was arguably its best. Voters may take into consideration that this is his penultimate chance to nab the award for this role as this season, the fifth, is Breaking Bad’s last.
Who Will Win: Damien Lewis. See: Homeland Hard-On above. I think this is a sleeper win.
Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Brendan Coyle and Jim Carter (Downton Abbey), Jared Harris (Mad Men), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Who Should Win: Peter Dinklage

Who are your favorites to win? Who wasn’t nominated that should have been?
Bryan Cranston amazes me. I had the opportunity to meet him and go through a question and answer session and it was amazing. To keep up with such a difficult character and still be able to play other roles and even go home to a normal life daily is just crazy. I really do think he will win. I love Jon Hamm, but I don’t think the role pushes him enough to deserve a win.
I really like Girls, but I Don’t watch much comedy so I don’t know how it compares. Lena Dunham impresses me a lot though.i cant imagine being nominated for writing, acting, and directing all at once! Crazy.
I did not realize American Horror Story was a miniseries, but it makes sense now that I know what to expect for next season. i love the show, it really delves into horror and crime history of los angeles, which are two subjects I love to research. I also met the producer and had a q&a for that show and the way they handle writng and creating the show is just crazy.Categorizing it as a miniseries will probably be the best decision Ryan Murphy has ever made in his life! Sweep of nominations, but I do think the competition will be fierce. im sure the next season will also be horrible, but it was pretty good this year.
And I love Sherlock so I hope Benedict wins, and I cant’t imagine it losing art direction or music..it was great!
Futurama, for the win. Also, Maurice LaMarche. Those are the ones I’m most interested in.
