News Ticker

BluTuesday: August 14th, 2012

Aloha everybody!  Joseph here and I’ll be bringing you some more of the newest releases on BluRay for August 14, 2012. This one is gonna extend into the 18th as well, for no other reason than I want the odds to be ever in your favor. I’ve got a pretty hefty list here today, so let’s bring on the new stuff.

Jaws (PG)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 100%

Released on June 20, 1975, this movie – based on the novel of the same name by Peter Benchley – is the quintessential thriller. If you’re unfamiliar with the story behind Jaws, then allow me to break it down for you: The story is about a killer shark terrorizing a bunch of beachgoers on Amity Island in the New England region. The movie has some heavy hitters leading the cast, with Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss playing Brody, Quint, and Hooper, respectively. Plus, it has the signature theme by John Williams leading the way. When it was initially released, it was a wild success. It spent five weeks in theaters, and was the #1 movie each week. It also managed to pull in over $260 million at the box office, which means that they really did need a bigger boat. This is a bona fide classic, and it’s worth checking out.

New Jack City (R)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 76%

When this movie came to theaters on March 8, 1991, it did so with a fantastic buzz. Starring Wesley Snipes, Allen Payne, Judd Nelson, Ice-T, and Chris Rock, it tells the gritty tale of Nino Brown and the Cash Money Brothers gang rising to prominence due to the rise of crack cocaine in New York City, and the NYPD detectives who are out to stop them. The movie was not only driven by its diverse cast and unflinching violence, but by its phenomenal soundtrack; the soundtrack was a staple in the New Jack Swing era. The movie spent nine weeks in theaters, including four weeks in the Top 5, reaching as high as #2. Despite the violent nature and unsettling subject matter, it is most certainly worth watching at least once.

The Hunger Games (PG-13)scheduled for release on August 18, 2012

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 85%

On March 23, 2012, this movie – based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins (who, coincidentally, helped to write the script) – roared into theaters.  Starring an ensemble cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Woody Harrleson, it tells the tale of young Katniss Everdeen, a volunteer tribute from District 12 in a post-apocalyptic future where a male and female tribute are forced to fight to the death in an annual game called The Hunger Games. This movie opened at #1 and stayed there for an entire month. In fact, it spent nine weeks in the Top 5, finally dropping out the week of May 18-24. Made with a budget of $78 million, its DOMESTIC gross (at the time of this writing) was about $398 million. It’s worldwide gross? $645 million. This was a great movie to watch, and the performances were stellar. I’ll be picking this up day one.

  1. We need Wesley Snipes to fight sharks with a bow and arrow. That would be awesome.

  2. Jaws is a perfect release this week! Our kids have been watching Shark Week since Sunday night. 🙂 I still have not seen Hungar Games at all, and I feel like the rest of the world has watched that at least once.

    • Some of us, three times. 🙂

Stay tuned later today for a special movie night announcement.

      • Sounds like a plan. I read all three books in a matter of days, and I want to see the movie so bad. I am allergic to movie theatres though, so this is not the first time that I am in the dark on cool movies.

        • …and by allergic I mean that I can not stand to sit in a theatre trying to watch a movie when I surrounded by loud popcorn crunching, seat kicking, cell phone talking 15 year olds… I have never been a fan of movie theatres, and have always just waited and watched movies at home in my living room with multiple drinks 😉

        • I took all three books in and read them in three days. I had to get used to the first-person narrative (not a fan), but it was an engrossing read nonetheless.

    • Oh no! Not jaws! It causes fear of sharks! I hate how it does that. Don’t get me on my soap box about shark conservation…
