BluTuesday - July 31st, 2012

What’s going on, y’all? Joseph here, and I’ve got the gift of new BluRay releases for you to enjoy.  Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot to pick from this week, but here’s hoping it’s an interesting one nonetheless.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%

This movie - which came to theaters on June 1, 1990 - came out around the time where Arnold Schwarzenegger was at the top of his game.  Based on the Philip K. Dick short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, it stars Schwarzenegger as a guy who wants to escape the doldrums of his life on Earth and fantasizes about adventures on Mars. He goes to get memories implanted in his head, but the procedure goes wrong - possibly because there’s already something there.  This is action movie schlock of the highest order, but it pulled in a lot of money at the box office, spending 16 weeks in theaters (6 of those in the Top 5), and earning about $120 million worldwide.  This is the perfect movie to check your brain at the door and enjoy.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 33%

On October 26, 1984, this drama was released to theaters.  Starring Teri Garr and Peter Weller, this tells the tale of what happens when a kid is forced to grow up much too soon and deal with his mother’s mistakes.  The movie didn’t last too long in theaters, only spending three weeks on the big screen and pulling in about $5.4 million.  To its credit, it did have a steep hill to climb, but it’s never promising to see a movie open at #7.  This seems like a gut-wrenching movie, but if you like that sort of movie, this is for you.
