What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from adjusting to Daylight Savings Time to bring you the latest releases to home media for March 15, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss Tina Fey, a dramedic look at the financial crisis, and Dem Thrones. Let’s get down to business, shall we?
Sisters (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 59%
The Ellis sisters have always been polar opposites: Maura (Amy Poehler) has always been the responsible one, while her sister Kate (Tina Fey) was always the reckless hothead. When they find out that their parents are putting their family home up for sale, they decide to send the house out with a raging party the likes of which no one in the town has seen before. This film, which also stars John Leguizamo, Maya Rudolph, and John Cena, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. I’m not a big fan of comedies, but this one has a kind of charm that was buried beneath the surface. Give it a watch.
The Big Short (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 88%
In 2008, Michael Burry (Christian Bale) realizes that the housing market was on the verge of collapse. He throws a lot of money into credit default swaps, making his investors millions. This attracts the attention of hedge fund managers, bankers, and other opportunists to make lots of money while the rest of the country falls into an economic collapse. This film, which also stars Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell, and Brad Pitt, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Despite my levels of snark that I just can’t turn off, this is a very good movie, and credit for that goes in no small part to Adam McKay. The comedic director pulls out no stops in making this a dramedy for the ages. I highly recommend it.
Game of Thrones: The Complete Fifth Season
Winter is coming. No, really. The fifth season of this critically acclaimed series has the big players in Westeros and Essos vying for power in the vacuum created Season Four. Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) is trying to keep the Night’s Watch acceptable in the eyes of the newly arrived Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dilate), a man who fashions himself as the rightful king of Westeros. Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) fights to maintain power in King’s Landing, while her brother Jamie (Nicolaj Coster-Waldeau) has a mission of his own. Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) goes to seek out an old friend, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) finds a new cause, and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) finds that holding on to her city requires some tough sacrifices. This series, which also stars , is available in a four disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a five disc DVD version. Let’s be honest: I can’t say anything about this show that you already don’t know. It’s wonderful, it’s engrossing, and it’s my pick of the week.
