What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from catching up on all of the podcasts I’ve been missing to bring you the latest releases to home media for May 26, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss bad roommates, the beginnings of the American Revolution, cops and robbers, and Liev Schreiber. Ready to get started? Let’s get to it.
The Loft (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 12%
In this thriller, five guys get together to rent a loft so they can have their own version of hedonism. But, when a mysterious woman wakes up dead, someone has some ‘splaining to do, and it promises to end life as they know it forever. This film, which stars Karl Urban, James Marsden, and Wentworth Miller, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. I’ve never heard of this movie until just this moment, and it seems like something that we would’ve seen about 20 years ago in theaters. That doesn’t necessarily mean this is a horrible movie, but it does mean that you should at least seek out a trailer before investing your hard earned money on this.
Sons of Liberty
In this dramatization of the American Revolution, we get to see the sparks of what would be the Revolutionary War take place. When Sam Adams (Ben Barnes, not the beer) refuses to pay his taxes, the Crown puts an arrest warrant out on him. This puts Adams in the line of fire with Thomas Hutchinson (Sean Gilder). When Hutchinson’s own estate is torched, this begins the ramp up to one of the most famous revolutions in world history. This miniseries, which also stars Michael Raymond-James, Henry Thomas, and Jason O’Mara, is available in a two disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a two disc DVD version. While this won’t help you pass any American History classes, it will be an entertaining miniseries to watch. Check it out.
Major Crimes: The Complete Third Season
In the third season of this critically acclaimed spinoff to The Closer, things are starting to heat up for the Major Crimes Division. Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell) has a lot on her plate; not only does she have to deal with her manipulative estranged husband Jack (Tom Berenger) coming back in her life, she also has to handle the gruesome crimes the MCD has to deal with - including the reappearance of sadistic killer Phillip Stroh (Bill Burke). This series, which also stars G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, and Nadine Velazquez, is available in a four disc DVD version. If you were a fan of The Closer, then it’s probably safe to say you’ll be a fan of this. If you just like police procedurals, you may wanna give this a look as well.
Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber) is having a rough go at it. He’s still a celebrity fixer for the law firm Goldman & Drexler, but his family life is in shambles. His father is essentially a fugitive from the law, his wife is getting the vapors for a cop, and he is in danger of losing his children forever. Will he be able to successfully juggle both his professional and personal life? Or will he end up having to sacrifice one for the other? This series, which also stars Jon Voight, Paula Malcomson, and Katherine Moenning, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a four disc DVD version. This show is brutal in its depiction, it tugs at the heartstrings in ways you wouldn’t expect it to, and it is my pick of the week.
