BluTuesday - September 20, 2016

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from blithely ignoring the world in favor of playing Destiny: Rise of Iron to bring you the latest releases to home media for September 20, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss Matthew McConaughey, heroes in a half shell, and N’Awlins. Let’s get to it.

Free State of Jones (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 46%

Set in Civil War-era Mississippi - basically three years ago, this film tells the “true” story of Southern farmer Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) as he unites slaves and poor farmers together to fight the Confederacy. In their uprising, they lead Jones County, MS to secede from the Confederacy and create the titular Free State of Jones. This film, which also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell, and David Maldonado, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Newton Knight has been a controversial figure in Mississippi for centuries, and this movie does nothing to acquit or prosecute him either way. It’s an interesting story, but I’m not entirely sure who the audience is for this. If you like historical dramas, have at it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 38%

This sequel to the 2014 smash hit finds the Turtles back at it. This time, alongside vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), they face an escaped Shredder (Brian Tee), mad genius Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry), and their dumb muscle Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly), as they concoct yet another plan to take over the world. But, there may be a bigger issue that none of them have anticipated lurking in the shadows. This film, which also stars Megan Fox, Laura Linney, and Brad Garrett, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. I’m sure this is a fine movie, but it’s probably not something I’ll be watching. If you have young children who like the first one, let them watch this one as well.

The Originals: The Complete Third Season

The third season of the hit CW show features brothers Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) estranged from each other while adjusting to being away from their long-lost sister Freya (Riley Voelkel). Klaus and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) are adjusting to parenthood while Hayley is dealing with Klaus having a major dose of petty. Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) and Davina (Danielle Campbell) rule New Orleans under a new status quo, and Cami (Leah Pipes) and Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood) come face to face with the first vampire the Mikaelson clan sired over a thousand years ago. This series, which also star Rebecca Breeds, Zach Roering, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, is available in a five disc Blu-ray version and a five disc DVD version. This show just keeps pulling out all the stops, and fans of the series will enjoy what they see.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
