What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from watching way too much TV to bring you the newest releases to home media for September 29, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss the most raucous a capella group known the man, DC TV, and the Doctor. Ready to get to it? Let’s go.
Pitch Perfect 2 (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 67%
After the surprising success of the original, it was obvious that they would be making a sequel, and here we are. After the Barden Bellas, led by Beca (Anna Kendrick) and Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) encounter a scandal that threatens their final year at university, they decide to face off against German supergroup Das Sound Machine and the rest of the stiff competition at the World Championships of A Capella. This film, which also stars Brittany Snow, Hailee Steinfeld, and Katey Sagal, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Come for the singing, stay to watch the Clay Matthews and the Green Bay Packers sing a capella. There are worse ways to spend your evening.
Arrow: The Complete Third Season
Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) can’t win. He tries to have a normal life with Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), but the forces of evil, chief among them being Ra’s al Ghul (Matthew Nable) and the League of Assassins. So, Ollie must don the emerald cowl and become Arrow once more. But, in doing so, he is assured that things will never be the same in Starling City. This series, which also stars David Ramsey, Brandon Routh, and John Barrowman, is available in both a four disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a five disc DVD version. This season was much maligned because of a lot of character quirks that kinda felt out of place, but it was still damn good. So much so, that it is half of my pick of the week. The other half is…
The Flash: The Complete First Season
Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) is a man on a mission. Ever since his mother was killed and his father was framed, he has devoted his life to finding his mother’s killer so his father can go free. However, when he’s struck by a freak bolt of lightning during a particle accelerator test gone awry, Barry Allen becomes the fastest man alive. This series, which also stars Jessie L. Martin, Candice Patton, and Tom Cavanaugh, is available in both a four disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a five disc DVD version. This was one of the best shows on TV last year, and it rode a high that was unparalleled by any series in its genre. As such, this is the other half of my pick of the week.
Doctor Who: Dark Water/Death in Heaven - 3D
The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) face their biggest challenge yet: Missy (Michelle Gomez), a devious miscreant who knows more about the Doctor than she’s letting on. When Missy’s scheme comes to fruition, the Doctor realizes that he has a tough choice to make with the fate of Earth at stake. This two-parter, which also stars Jemma Redgrave, Ingrid Oliver, and Samuel Anderson, is available in a two disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD version. Series Eight of Doctor Who was met with mixed reviews by a lot of different people, but no one could deny the powerful two-part finale as being great. This is a definite pickup for fans of the show who want to see this in eye-popping 3D.
