Ms. Marvel - Vol.3 #13

Previously in issue #12

Crushed (Part 1 of 3): A new arc brings new love and a new villain.

Kamala has been training at New Attilan - no rest for the hero of the city, who managed to also get an A- social studies. Medusa is concerned, worried Kamala’s insistence on living at home has made her vulnerable.

We’re treated to more of Kamala’s scene-stealing parents.

At home, her family doesn’t understand why she’s jogging so much - her excuse for spending time away from home. Her mother thinks it’s indecent to sweat in public. I’ve really missed Kamala’s family.

Throwing her parents a bone, Kamala agrees to look presentable for the company they’re expecting: old friends from out of town and their son, who Kamala remembers as a nose picker when they were kids.

Of course, Kamran turns out to be handsome and a geek - totally into all the same things as Kamala.

Her father reluctantly agrees to let Kamala and Kamran go to the store, as long as her brother tags along. There’s more bonding and we almost get some handholding before a new Inhuman appears, and she’s hell bent on taking over Jersey City. Good thing Kamala has taken to wearing her uniform under her street clothes. She dips away to change.

As Kamala and Kaboom throw down, Kaboom hints at other Inhumans who just want to tear shit up. This was another of Medusa’s concerns: How many people out there were transformed by the Terrigen Mists? And how many of them want to use their powers for evil?

Kamala eventually gets the upper hand and delivers a nearly fatal blow. Upset, Kamala runs off to change and this is witnessed by Kamran. But, it’s okay! Because Kamran pulls Kamala aside to confess he’s Inhuman too!

Overall Thoughts:
  • I love where this arc is going already. More Inhumans, more time with Kamala’s family, and a love interest who’s also Inhuman.
  • Making Kamran Inhuman as well does away with the “I have to hide my secret identity from my one true love” trope. But poor, poor Bruno. He’s going to be devastated.
  • Just had a horrible thought: What if Kamran thinks more like Kaboom than Kamala?
  • Speaking of Kaboom: It’s interesting they’re tackling what it means for Kamala to harm another human… possibly kill them. Medusa will definitely see this as further proof Kamala should be living in Attilan full-time. Good luck explaining that to her parents.
