Ms. Marvel - Vol.3 #2
My fear for this series after reading the first issue was that Kamala Khan would find the answers to all of her problems once she became a sexy blonde superhero. I need not have worried. Within the first few pages of issue 2, Kamala realizes that when she feels uncomfortable, when she feels like she has to be someone else, she turns into Ms. Marvel.
No matter what she looks like on the outside, Kamala’s true beauty lies in how she treats people, even those who aren’t nice to her and that’s what shines through when she comically uses her new abilities to save a douchey classmate. When she realizes that her emotions control what she can do (commenting on how small she feels actually shrinks her down to the size of an insect), Kamala understands there’s a serious learning curve. But she is smart enough to know that a bodysuit and tight boots aren’t necessarily conducive to saving lives and fighting crime.
The most important lesson, of course, is that changing the way she looks isn’t what’s going to make her happy. Also important: Don’t get caught sneaking back into the house.
Despite getting grounded, Kamala has had a taste of making a difference, of belonging to something bigger. I’m anxious to dive into issue #3 to see what kind of progression she makes in controlling her new abilities.
