The Flash - S4E5 - Girls Night Out

Previously on The Flash, “Elongated Journey Into Night”

An episode centered around Barry’s and Iris’ respective bachelor/bachelorette parties mostly worked because

1. Iris and Caitlin had scenes alone where the topic of discussion wasn’t Barry, Jay, Ronnie, or Eddie.
2. The guys had the stereotypical experience while the women ended up fighting crime and saving the day without their help.

The Flash should do this more often, but it wasn’t without its faults.

Caitlin reluctantly agrees to attend Iris’ bachelorette dinner, hosted by Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards). Norvock (Mark Sweatman), Amunet’s henchman, crashes the party to force Caitlin back into their boss’ service. She goes full Killer Frost to fight him off. Sensing that there’s still some of Caitlin’s goodness in Frost, Iris decides they can’t let her face Amunet (Katee Sackhoff) alone. And since the guys aren’t answering their cell phones, she, Felicity, and Cecile trail Frost to her meeting with Amunet.

So begins the often heavy-handed “girl power” theme of the episode. Though it was extremely forced (“hashtag feminism!”), it did produce the above mentioned scenes with Caitlin/Killer Frost and Iris that the show painfully lacked. Iris has less reason than anyone — Killer Frost tried to kill her, after all — to have faith in Killer Frost, but she does anyway. During one of Caitlin’s brief appearances as herself, she even points out that she and Iris have never been more than work friendly.

The women manage to disrupt Amunet’s plan to sell a meta-human, The Weeper (Matt Alfonso), whose tears produce a euphoric high, to the Yakuza, but Amunet gets away. Iris convinces Killer Frost to accept the Caitlin in her and vice versa.

Meanwhile, Ralph crashes the home movies, brandy, and steak dinner plans Cisco had for Barry’s party and takes the crew to a strip club instead. There, Barry gets hilariously drunk off a Cisco concoction and Joe discovers that Joanie (Riley Jade), Cecile’s daughter, has been stripping on the side. The required bar fight breaks out and the male members of Team Flash find themselves in jail.

Up To Speed

Barry’s drunk ass yelling, “I’m The Flash!” in the strip club was funny — especially when he does it right after Joe yells out “I’m a cop!” to stop the bar fight.

Dibny’s disappointment when he realizes the chick with the white hair is really Caitlin, and that means he has zero shot, was laugh out loud funny. I think that’s mainly due to Sawyer’s delivery of the line, “Oh, it’s just Caitlin.”

Kudos for allowing Joe and Cecile to express their very realistic anxiety over becoming late-in-life parents.

I don’t get hung up on accents like most people, and I couldn’t tell you what kind of accent Amunet was supposed to have; but I do know I enjoyed Katee Sackhoff and I’m glad she got away to lug that bucket of metal around another day.

Speed Bumps

I know he didn’t want their help (and who could blame him after he’s been beaten to purposely make him cry), but it makes no sense that Iris and the others would let The Weeper run off into the night. Even worse, at the end of the episode, it appeared that they were going to keep the events surrounding him a secret from the rest of the team.

I don’t care about Joanie.

#Feminism. No one says that.

Stuck in Neutral

I can’t tell if like the addition of Dibny. He’s not awful, but he’s not Wally. I want Wally on Team Flash. Period.

Killer Frost is a lot of fun, but they gotta lose that distracting sound effect when she speaks.

But Wait; There’s More

The Thinker tracks The Weeper through a dark alley and appears before him, hovering in the sky. He basically told him, “I brought you in this world and I’ll take you out.”
