Van Helsing - S2E5/S2E6 - Save Yourself/Veritas Vincit

Previously on Van Helsing, “A Home”

There was plenty of movement in “Save Yourself”: Lucky and Flesh press on to find Vanessa as they worry about Mohamad’s new cocaine addiction; Axel tries to use Doc’s guilt over leaving him to talk her into killing him as he fears they won’t find Vanessa in time; Dmitri takes over Julius’ army, and Vanessa and Julius take on Sam, who manages to get away. And Vanessa, Doc, and Julius have all been dreaming of the same red door.

But “Veritas Vincit” has the action we’ve come to love and expect from Van Helsing, plus the reunions we’ve been waiting for.

Vanessa seems to have an psychic/emotional connection to those she’s turned, so it’s only really a surprise to her and Doc when a “feeling” leads her right to Doc and Axel, who’ve been looking for her. Vanessa still doesn’t trust Doc, and she doesn’t trust her ability to turn vampire since the last one she bit died in her arms. This keeps her from granting Axel’s wish, even when he threatens her life.

While Axel is knocked out, Vanessa heads for the bunker in The Farm (Susan came to her in a dream and revealed that’s the location of the red door). When he wakes up, Axel follows Vanessa, and Doc and Julius head for the nearby military base for supplies.

Down below, Vanessa and Axel run into Scarlett Harker (Missy Peregrym), a badass in her own right who has been tracking Vanessa. Oh, and she’s also been dreaming of the red door. Scarlett attempts to kill Axel because, understandably, to her, vampires = bad. Of course, Vanessa won’t let her do that, and during their fight Scarlett learns that Vanessa heals and gets downright feral when she scraps. A truce is called so they can both continue on and find answers.

Oh, boy, do they find answers. Past a nursery where it appears they were making hybrid human-vampires, Vanessa finds a room with a mural on the wall. She remembers her mother arguing with a doctor and then later swearing to protect her… and her sister, Scarlett. Scarlett doesn’t believe it as first, but it does make sense. The parents who raised her were eerily prepared for some kind of apocalypse, and vampires came for them before the great uprising. Vanessa’s memories are proven true when she finds a key her mother hid in the wall. The phone rings, and the woman on the other line (their mother?) doesn’t get to say much before they are cut off: Dmitri and his squad have arrived.

Bits and Bites

Scarlett’s last name, Harker, is an obvious nod to Mina Harker, the Bram Stoker character. However, considering what her adopted parents knew, it might mean more.

Dmitri sends Scab to meet with The Sisterhood, a group of female vampires he banished. He wants an alliance now that Julius is teamed up with the woman who can end them all, but the Sisterhood doesn’t appear too keen to hear anything Dmitri has to say. Still, he’s taken to their leader, Queen Maya.

This show is forever giving me greatness I didn’t know I wanted or needed. This week, the pairing of Doc and Julius. More of them together, please.
