Gotham - S3E11 - “Mad City: Beware the Green-Eyed Monster” | Starring:  Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, David Mazouz, Morena Baccarin, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Jesica Lucas, Chris Chalk, Drew Powell, Michael Chiklis, Benedict Samuel, and Maggie Geha.

This is the winter break finale and we have a few things going on in Gotham: Penguin loves Nygma and killed his girlfriend in the ultimate act of jealousy. Barbara knows the truth about Penguin and wants to have some fun with the information like only she can. Tabitha gets her hand cut off to match her man’s, Butch. Barnes was contaminated with Tetch’s sister’s blood and became a super-powered vigilante. Bruce and Selina are tracking down the Court of Owls with a full-grown Ivy in tow. And Thompkins is marrying Falcone’s son while Gordon and her keep trying to say good-bye, but seem to have a hard time staying away from each other. So, let’s see what craziness Gotham has in store for us this week.

Well, we start the crazy with Mario all upset because Thompkins can’t leave crazy Gordon alone and now that he has a little bit of Alice inside of him, Mario does not want to go back to being the plain old, boring, rich surgeon with a powerful father and all he could ever ask for in life - except Thompkins’ heart.

Gordon unknowingly runs into Mario while he is trying to get some useful information about Alice’s blood. He does not kill Gordon, but just puts a hurting on him and tells him he wants Thompkins to hate him before he kills him. He leaves Gordon a clue that leads him to Arkham and to Tetch. Tetch is all Mad Hatter’d out with his newspaper top hat. And it seems Tetch was playing the long game since Gordon caught him. Tetch is not telling who he infected before he was committed to Arkham. Gordon fools him by playing a rhyming game and Tetch tells on himself.

When Gordon brings Mario in for a blood test, the results show he is clean. Uh oh, Gordon. Now what?  Of course, this is Gordon we’re talking about so he just threatens people.  Then Gordon threatens Mario in his own house, but Zsasz is there as Mario’s backup. Gordon gets out of the house just in time to profess his love to Thompkins before she walks down the aisle. However, Mario’s plan worked and Thompkins slaps Gordon for saying that on her wedding day and walks out to marry Mario on Falcone’s arm. Gordon gets the crap beat out of him just before he gets a call from Bullock, who says Mario really did cheat the test for Alice’s blood. Before they can get to them at the wedding, the couple leave the reception and go to a lake house of Falcone’s. Gordon goes to Falcone, who knew Mario had the virus. Falcone makes Gordon swear he’ll bring Mario back alive.

Bruce finds out that the leader of the Whisper’s gang has been killed, and the Court may know he was involved with trying to bring them down, which, of course, goes against his agreement with them. The Scooby Gang and the Whispers plan to break into the Court’s safe. Selina feels they were being watched and warns Alfred. And she was right to be worried because Talon has killed the rest of the Whispers and it is safe to say that the break-in plan has been compromised. The gang goes ahead with the plan and find a crystal owl in the safe. Talon shows up and starts to kick everyone’s butt until an unknown woman comes to the rescue. Well, unknown to us, but not to Selina: It is her mother, Maria (Ivana Milicevic).

Nygma has no clue who killed his lady love until Barbara comes in and sheds some light on the mystery. He still is not buying it, but the seed has been planted. Nygma tells Penguin he may have feelings for him in a ploy to see if Penguin will show his true colors.  And of course Penguin bites! And now Nygma knows. But in an act of pure friendship, Penguin tells Nygma he does not want to lose him and that he is the best friend he has ever known. Nygma returns the affection and tells him that he is his best friend, too. Then he walks right into Barbara’s club and tells her, Tabitha, and Butch that he wants to destroy Penguin. And all he has to do in return is to support Barbara as the new head of crime in Gotham.

Best Scene: Barbara does her best Riddler impression and finally clues Nygma in to who killed Isabel… I mean, Isabella. The penny drops…

Best Line(s):  Barbara says to Nygma when she gives him her recruitment speech, “Your brains, their brawn, and my… me.”

Most Ridiculous/Funny Scene: A most ridiculous scene to say the least - As Gordon tries to fool Tetch into telling him who he infected, Tetch cannot help himself and says too much in their little rhyming game.

Honorable Mention: Bullock tells Gordon to take the day. Gordon, of course, says no. Bullock says he is the acting captain and Gordon says I know. Does that rhyme?

Honorable Mention: Nygma stabbing Penguin after the mayor presented an award for the book, An Oral History of Gotham City Sewers.  But alas, it was just a dream.

Best Gotham Acting Moment: Penguin professes his friendship to Nygma with all the heartfelt sincerity he could muster. I actually felt bad for Penguin as Nygma tells him that they are best friends before he walks away.

Honorable Mention: Gordon bursts into the church and tells Thompkins she cannot marry Mario. When he tells her, “Lee, you cannot marry him…” and the words catch in his throat, I could feel the love and sorrow in his voice.  And that is saying something that Gordon is on this list… it must have been good!

Summary

Gordon goes to the lake house as Mario, only hearing the virus in his head, is charging towards Thompkins, who is oblivious. Of course Gordon shoots him right in front of her.  Fade to black. So that was the end until the new year. It was a very good episode; I would say the best of the series. At times it was very well-acted. Now it was not Emmy-worthy by any stretch, but it had its moments and I was very happy with the end result. The next episode is not until January so we get to ponder how Falcone will try to get his revenge on Gordon for killing his son, how Thompkins will act now that Gordon has killed again and she was witness to it this time, where has Selina’s mom been all this time, and finally what is Penguin going to do when Nygma runs wild on him?
