Kickstarter Spotlight: August 2014

Welcome to our new feature, Kickstarter Spotlight. Once a month, I will post a handful of Kickstarter games – tabletop, roleplaying, or card – that I think look promising. I’m going to lean mostly towards games that have yet to reach their goals to hopefully help them get noticed. Designers with 300% of their funding already don’t really need our help. Though if something looks too amazing to pass up, I might include it. If you ever have a game you want included, shoot it my way and I’ll add it to my next month’s article.

Quintessence: The Game

This is a strategy card game for up to 5 players. There’s not much explanation to gameplay itself, but it’s based upon the five elements of the natural philosophy: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Ether and the effects they have over one another. There are element cards and action cards which players use to attack and defend themselves. I love the design of the cards. This could be a great game. It’s promised to be easy to learn and play.

I, Spy

I, Spy is a game of manipulation, deceit, and misdirection placed in the pre-World War 1 era. Players take on the role of a spy for one of the imperial powers of Europe (Germany, France, Italy, etc.) and the goal is to get your homeland to be the most popular (without being sabotaged by your opponents) before the begin of the war. Espionage! This game looks great.

Gathering of Guardians

Gathering of Guardians is a superhero-themed board game for 3-5 players. Gameplay involves collecting heroes to form your own superhero team. Players are awarded fame by completing missions, training, and defeating and capturing villians. The player with the most fame wins. The artwork on the cards is amazing. The game has been in the works for about three years now, so I really hope they meet their goal after all that time invested.

Tymor

Tymor is a fantasy strategy game for 2-4 players. The game involves resource management and kingdom building, which are some of my favorite aspects of board games. In this game you lead a village struggling to recover from some sort of calamity that fucked up all the seasons. You must bring prosperity back to your people by finding riches, settling new lands, and defending yourself against your opponents.

That’s all for now. These were the games I’d be most likely to back had I spare cash on hand to be backing games. If there’s another Kickstarter game you think we should know about, leave it here in the comments or send us an email and we’ll gladly check it out.

About Patti Matteucci (265 Articles)
Patti Matteucci plays in an imaginary band in Illinois where she rocks the mic like a vandal while simultaneously cooking MCs like a pound of bacon. She is into most nerdy things but doesn’t excel enough in any to be labeled a nerd. One of her top skillz is scouring the internet for recipes, printing out a big pile, and then throwing them away before ever trying them when she remembers that you can have food made and delivered to your front door by somebody else. She is a 14 year old trapped inside a 33 year old’s body (or maybe also a 14 year old’s body) with an unabashed love for Justin Bieber and far too much time spent marrying celebrities in Sims 3.
