Lucifer - S3E21 - Anything Pierce Can Do I Can Do Better

Previously on Lucifer, “The Angel of San Bernadino”

CR: FOX

Blood In The Water

We pick up right where we left off. Lucifer pauses his rage at Pierce as they both marvel over the loss of his mark. Pierce’s plan was to have Chloe fall in love with him so he would become vulnerable like Lucifer does around Chloe, but now that he can die he wants to live and have a real relationship with her. (I have some theories about this that I’ll share later). Maze is upset because part two of the plan was for her to kill Cain and frame Lucifer, thereby forcing him to leave Earth and take her back to hell with him.

Since Pierce is on the outs with Chloe, Lucifer decides to use this opportunity to convince Chloe to fall in love with him but instead of focusing on telling Chloe WHY he loves her, he turns it into a contest with Pierce. The case of the week is pretty ridiculous, but in true Lucifer fashion, the killer helps Lucifer realize that he’s already lost Chloe by not being honest about how he feels. Too bad that he finally works up the nerve just in time to see Pierce propose.

Working for God

Charlotte is on a mission to get saved and Amenadiel wants to help Lucifer get Chloe because he believes that his father wants them together. The two of them try to expose Pierce’s secret identity as The Sinnerman, but they can’t find any solid evidence to expose him. Charlotte is trying hard to make up for her sins but is she even really damned? At this point, maybe losing her life to The Mother and recognizing her faults is all she can do. Amenadiel also needs to let go and let God. Trying to figure out what God wants seems to be pushing everyone farther away from their goal, which brings us to …

Is Chloe really the key (a theory): I’m hesitant to think that Chloe is truly the key to Lucifer’s or Cain’s (or even Amenadiel’s) salvation. Similar to Westworld, ultimately the journey God is taking them on is about self-discovery. It’s not that Chloe loving Pierce makes him vulnerable, it’s him loving Chloe unselfishly that removes his curse. Cain’s sin was his hate and jealousy for his brother that caused him to take a life, putting Chloe’s life above his, erased that sin. Lucifer is also on a journey of self-discovery and I think Chloe is a piece of that. His ultimate lesson will be what Dr. Linda is trying to get him to see: it’s not about doing what his father wants or doesn’t want him to do, it’s about making these decisions to move forward in spite of what God’s plan is. What’s sad is that the real pawn in all of this is Chloe. She doesn’t know about all the supernatural happenings around her and I don’t even know if Pierce’s “love” is true.

While last week was hard to deal with because of the pacing, hopefully the last few episodes will take us smoothly through the end. It’s still hard to believe that Chloe would fall for Pierce so hard, so fast and even consider a proposal when he hasn’t even met Trixie yet, but plot. The question now is how will Lucifer counter Pierce in a way that’s authentic and about giving Chloe what she’s been asking for which is basically just the truth. And now that we know Maze’s endgame, how will it intersect or diverge from Lucifer’s? Maybe being rejected by Chloe is enough to drive him back to hell and give Maze what she wants.
